When Wheel of Fortune premiered back in 1975, Chuck Woolery served as the host until Christmas, 1981. Later that month, Pat Sajak made his debut on the show as its new host.

At the time, many fans were sad to see Sajak go. However, many understood, as he had served in his role on Wheel of Fortune for over four decades. That said, Sajak recently announced his latest project. It’s been announced that he will join Joe Moore for a stage production of Prescription Murder, which is connected to the television series, Columbo.

Columbo was a long-running crime drama starring Peter Falk as the title character, a homicide detective with the L.A. police department. With a pilot first coming out in 1968, Falk would continue playing the character well into 2003.

The Columbo character was previously played by Bert Freed in an episode of The Chevy Mystery Show, “Enough Rope.” This was later adapted into the Prescription: Murder stage play. The 1968 pilot, which served as Falk’s debut as the character, was actually a TV movie based on the play.

According to a press release from the Hawaii Theatre Center, “Pat Sajak, just retired as host of the popular Wheel of Fortune game show following 41 seasons, and his long-time buddy Joe Moore return to the Hawaii Theatre Center main stage in 2025, starring in William Link and Richard Levinson’s original Columbo mystery thriller, Prescription: Murder.”

Sajak Will Be In The Aloha State For The Big Performance

Moore will play Columbo, while Sajak will play Dr. Roy Flemming. In addition to Sajak and Moore, other cast members include Bryce Moore, Therese Olival, Amy K. Sullivan, and Aiko Chinen. Rob Duval, a “multi Po’okela winner,” will direct the production.

The description also explained the story. As it read, “Providing the inspiration for the TV series Columbo, this theatrical predecessor tells the story of a brilliant psychiatrist (Sajak) and his mistress (Olival) who hatch a plot to murder his neurotic and possessive wife (Sullivan) that depends on a bizarre impersonation to create a perfect alibi.”

While best known for his work with Wheel of Fortune, Sajak has had a few acting roles throughout his career. In 1983, he appeared in an episode of Days of Our Lives. That said, Sajak is also known for appearing as himself on various shows, from Santa Barbara to Rugrats.

Prescription: Murder will premiere on July 31, 2025. The show will run until August 10, 2025. Proceeds will go to support the Hawaii Theatre Center.
