‘S.W.A.T.’ Star Teases Spinoff After Shocking Cancellation
The cast, crews, and fans of the CBS show S.W.A.T. probably have whiplash after the last few years. The network has canceled the popular show three different times. The last cancellation was announced in March. Fans are still hoping the show can be saved like it was twice before. If not, one cast member teased a possible spinoff.
Fans Try To Save Beloved CBS Show
CBS first tried to cancel S.W.A.T. in 2023 after the show’s sixth season. However, they changed their minds within days after major backlash from viewers and the show’s lead, Shemar Moore. The network agreed to renew the show for a seventh and final season.
Everyone thought the show was done but in a surprise move, CBS announced plans to bring the show back for Season 8, which is currently airing. Unfortunately, the current season is very likely the show’s last.
It was announced earlier this year that the show hadn’t been renewed for a ninth season. But S.W.A.T. fans aren’t giving up easily this time like they didn’t with the previous two cancellations. One dedicated fan created a petition for CBS, another network, or even a streamer like Netflix to pick up the show for another season. So far the petition has over 70,000 signatures. Will it be enough to convince CBS?
The network hasn’t back down from the third cancellation yet.
Cast Isn’t Giving Up
Fans of the show aren’t fighting alone. Shemar Moore spearheaded the first two campaigns to save S.W.A.T. He has some help trying to convince CBS to bring the show back for Season 8. David Lim, who plays Officer Victor Tan, went on a local TV station to plead for the show’s renewal.
Shemar Moore is still vocal on social media to rally fans, too. But they aren’t the only two cast members trying to figure out how to save the show.
Annie Ilonzeh joined S.W.A.T. in Season 8 as the newest member of the team, Devin Gamble. Her character took a while to mesh with the rest of the S.W.A.T. team due to her father killing a cop. However, the rest of the team has fully embraced her now and the actress isn’t ready to let go yet.
She spoke to Us Weekly ahead of the Season 8 finale. Annie Ilonzeh called the cancellation a “bummer” but assured fans that the cast is still fighting for another renewal.
“Every time we do a massive push on our socials, people [join the] fight when they sign and they start reposting and we do have some bites,” she revealed about the tactics they are using.
Despite being a newbie to the show, she thinks it would be a “great accomplishment” for the show to reach double-digit seasons. If not, she has another idea to keep S.W.A.T. going in some way.
S.W.A.T. Star Teases Spinoff
Shemar Moore has been fighting for S.W.A.T. for so long and continues to fight for another season. But according to Annie Ilonzeh, if the show comes back for another season and is then canceled again, the Young & The Restless alum is done. He told her that he would be satisfied with one more season.
But Annie Ilonzeh isn’t. She floated the idea of a spinoff to Us Weekly. “It has just been brought up in conversation — especially between newbies. We could totally do this newbie spinoff,” she said.

The actress added, “I would love to have Gamble at the forefront of a show still in the S.W.A.T. world. That would be amazing.”
