Early on, Lane shared his advice for cooking pasta. Some words of wisdom he shared included, “Think of it like a steak, right. You want to season it. You want to have it [to] have a nice texture to it. So that’s what ‘al dente’ means. ‘To the tooth…Also, save the pasta water, so you can mix it with the sauce and cook it together.”

King noted, “You’re kind of sounding like a chef to me, right.” However, she soon segued into King’s many other talents, from opera singer to painter. She then discussed his comedy routines.

King then prefaced what she was about to say next with, “Can we talk about the standup? Can I just say one joke? I hope I don’t get in trouble.”

King continued, “You do a riff about white women who approached you. And they said something about cooking, and you said, ‘What in the f***** are you talking about?’” Describing the line as “hilarious,” she then asked, “What does that mean?”

Different Versions Of The Clip Have Popped Up Online

Lane responded, “I love you, Gayle King. It means exactly what you think it means.”

“What in the hell? No, white women, they’re fine during the day, and then they have one sip of a rosé, and they’re like, ‘Tonight’s about me.’ And they just won’t stop. They won’t stop, I’m telling you. Horrible.”

According to People, King’s use of a slur was censored following the live broadcast in feeds of the show. The censored version has also been used on the network’s social channels, including the program’s YouTube page. Lane has also shared a censored version of the clip on his Instagram page, in a post shared by CBS News and CBS Mornings.

However, uncensored versions of the original did pop up on social media. Many commenters shared their surprise at watching the clip. Many weighed in, some thinking it was important to keep things in context, while other thought it was inappropriate to say. Some comments included:

  • “I had to watch this at least 6 times. Like did she really say that????”
  • “Omg this is a wild time to be alive.”
  • “Girl I thought this was saying you died.”

That said, many comments also focused specifically on Lane and his recent work. As one comment shared, “Matteo Lane is freaking hilarious and incredibly talented. I can’t be the only person incredibly pleased to see this success for him, right?” Another shared, “Thank you for educating the Americans about how to cook pasta!!”
