‘Bachelorette’ Katie Thurston Reveals IVF Embryo Results

Bachelorette Katie Thurston reveals the results of her intense fast-track fertility treatment. Her goal was to quickly harvest eggs and hopefully have viable embryos to freeze before she began chemotherapy. She promised fans that she would update them on the status of her IVF treatments when she knew something. Today, she shared a huge update and revealed what she knows about if they were successful or not. What did she say? Keep reading to get all the details.
Bachelorette Katie Thurston Reveals Fertility Treatment Results
Bachelorette Katie Thurston has been preparing to undergo chemotherapy for what is now being classified as stage 4 breast cancer. She was at stage 3 but sadly found out that it has progressed to her liver and so now is considered stage 4.
She shared that it really will not change her treatment plan very much. Since it is the same form of cancer that originated in her breast, that is what treatment will focus on. Her treatment will begin on Friday after having to endure weeks of testing and appointments.
Katie will undergo six rounds of chemotherapy, three weeks apart. She has already had a port placed to make treatment smoother. Supporters have been sending her lots of advice on how to endure chemotherapy.
Now, after having 17 eggs harvested, Katie is sharing the results of the fertility treatments. She went to Instagram to share the update. The Bachelorette revealed that out of the 17 eggs retrieved only six were fertilized. Next, the fertilized eggs have to make it to the blastocyst stage.
She shared that only three made it to that next stage. They were then put through genetic testing. Only two were able to be saved and frozen. One is grade B and one is grade C. She concluded saying, “This is the reality of IVF.”
What Does All This Mean?
Bachelorette Katie Thurston also talked about genetic testing and that her fertility doctor did inform her of a genetic mutation in her ATM gene. She shared that this gene helps to repair DNA and when it doesn’t work correctly it can increase the risk of cancer, especially breast cancer.
As far as Katie discussing the embryo results, what does grade B and C mean? According to cofertility.com, embryos are graded so that the odds of success are better rated. The site said, “In other words, embryo grading is important because it can give you an idea of your odds of success prior to transferring that embryo. It can also provide insight into whether or not another IVF cycle might be beneficial, with or without adjustments to the treatment protocol.”
The higher the grade the more likely a healthy pregnancy can occur. The two best ones to have are A and B. Katie has a B embryo which has a good chance of producing a healthy pregnancy for her. Grade C is not as desirable as an A or B but studies have shown that it can still result in a viable pregnancy.
