Hallmark renewed When Calls The Heart Season 13 as Season 12 ended on a cliffhanger with Elizabeth, Nathan, and Children leaving Hope Valley. Now that Little Jack has diabetes, Elizabeth has a bigger priority than her  personal life. She is focused on her child.

Now, there is a major change at the Hallmark series. This could change the direction of Season 13.

When Calls The Heart Has A New Showrunner Joy Gregory

When Calls The Heart Season 13 will have a significant change. Lindsay Sturman will no longer be the showrunner. Instead, Joy Gregory will be the next showrunner for the long-running Hallmark series. Sturman and Gregory worked on Joan of Arcadia together.

On the Official Hearties Aftershow, Brian Bird announced that Joy Gregory was the new showrunner. Joy was gracious after Bird gave her a lovely welcome to the series. She also mentioned the Hearties as she spoke about how special this Hallmark series is.

Thank you so much Brian. And, I feel really honored to be trusted with carrying this ship forward. I’m deeply inspired by the fan engagement on the show. It’s like nothing I’ve experienced in 25 seasons of TV that I’ve written and produced. It’s a very special show and it suits my taste.

Next, she shared what she loves to create in a series. “I love small moments between people. I love to watch flawed people try to love each other as best they can in difficult circumstances.” She admitted that she had written for shows that were not looking for those sorts of moments. However, When Calls The Heart embraces those types of moments. Therefore, she has found her perfect home.

Some of her writing credits include “When Autumn Leaves Begin To Fall,” “Through The Valley,” and “Having Faith.” The latter two were written along with Lindsay Sturman. Gregory has written for such series as The Resident, Madame Secretary, and Monarch.

The Hallmark Series Could Lean Into More Faith-Based Storylines

The new When Calls The Heart showrunner Joy Gregory has shared her enthusiasm for her new job and takes this position with a lot of faith and gratitude. She has already shared how this show fits her ideal style of writing and themes. Could this mean that the upcoming season will have more faith-based stories? Possibly.

There is no doubt that with Little Jack’s diabetes diagnosis, and subsequent movie to Cape Fullerton, Elizabeth could be dealing with more emotional issues. There will certainly be opportunities to include some faith-based stories as she continues with her journey of making sure her child is able to live his fullest life.

However, Joy Gregory has previously shared that she also loves a good redemption story. Speaking to the National Catholic Reporter back in 2018, she revealed that redemption stories and stories about “women trying figure it out” are always her favorites. This new season seems like it is her dream challenge.
