As a talk show hostess, Kelly Clarkson has interviewed a wide array of guests over the years. But in a recent interview, she was on the other side.

While speaking with Kylie Kelce, Kelly opened up about her experience in the music industry. As the first American Idol winner, she paved the way for many other up-and-coming performers. But the road wasn’t always easy.

During the interview, Kelly Clarkson admitted that many coaches who went on to be on The Voice could be bullies behind the scenes. See what fueled their ire and what the talk show hostess had to say about the situation.

Kelly Clarkson Didn’t Always Have A Great Experience With Music Industry Pros

According to Kelly Clarkson, being the very first American Idol winner wasn’t quite the dream come true she hoped it would be. Although she enjoyed the perks and fame that came along with winning, Kelly admitted it was also incredibly lonely.

She was surrounded by adoring fans, but no one seemed to understand what the experience felt like.

“I had no one. I was the first winner. It was hard. Not to sound like, whatever, it was really hard,” the talk show hostess shared on Kylie Kelce’s podcast, Not Gonna Lie. “People were really mean. People that were really mean have been coaches. You know what I’m saying? Like, hated talent shows. And they ended up being on The Voice.”

Kelly added that everything turned out alright in the end, but mentioned certain people were incredibly “cruel” at first. She explained that many professionals in the music industry turned up their noses at talent shows in the beginning.

After finding monumental success in the music industry, Kelly Clarkson joined The Voice for Seasons 14-21 and then temporarily returned for Season 23. During the interview, she told Kylie Kelce that her time on American Idol truly gave her a chance to empathize and connect with the contestants.

Working alongside other music industry professionals she once considered “mean” couldn’t have been easy, but Kelly made it work. At the end of the day, she knew she had a unique opportunity to boost another undiscovered singer’s career.

“People like us who have been there in that audition process and just being so judged instantaneously, on maybe not your best performance but you know you can do better, it’s a hard — it’s a grueling thing and its unforgiving in a lot of ways,” the singer admitted.
