In a press release, the following synopsis was given: “Revered journalist Ema Garay, known for unmasking criminals who’ve evaded the law, is thrown off course when she meets Leo Mercer, a respected man in the community who becomes her prime suspect when she sets out to investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl. As she searches for the truth, Ema is forced to confront her own demons.”

As more details were given, it was said that Ema’s team will soon become involved “with a new investigation after a 16-year-old violin player.” The missing musician notably “was in contact with a mysterious older man — also goes missing.’

The series is based on the Harlan Coben book of the same name. Netflix noted it was the author’s first Latin America adaptation.

Notably, Netflix has made a few adaptations of Coben’s books over the years. This also included Fool Me Once, Hold Tight, The Innocent, Stay Close, Gone for Good, The Stranger, The Woods, and Safe.

Harlan Coben Himself Also Discussed The Series On Social Media

In fact, this is the third adaptation of a Coben book coming out this year. Caught follows the previous Missing You and Just One Look. In fact, two more Netflix adaptations, Run Away and I Will Find You, are believed to be in the works.

Coben himself also discussed the upcoming series on Instagram. As he wrote, “I’m so thrilled with the 6 episode series this talented group created. English speaking folks: you can [watch] subtitled or dubbed or heck, both. Netflix gives you that option like with Squid Games or Money Heist.”

Being based on a book doesn’t necessarily mean the Netflix series isn’t based on a true story. However, Netflix’s own website states, when asked if this is the case, “No, it’s fictional.”

Miguel Cohan’s adaptation also notably differs from the original book in various ways. For example, the story originally took place in New Jersey. However, the series favors an Argentine setting: the city of San Carlos de Bariloche.

Speaking with Variety, Cohan shared “Bariloche is a fantastic location, offering both stunning beauty and a sense of isolation that makes it perfect for a thriller. Bariloche captures the same spirit and emotions evoked by the novel, even if the setting isn’t an exact match. It organically becomes its own universe – a small city that isn’t quite a town but not a metropolis either.”

The series is available for streaming on Netflix, having been released on 26 March 2025. At this time, the series is currently made up of six episodes. An English-language trailer has also been released.
