‘American Idol’ Sam Sparks Shines After Tragic Accident
One thing that American Idol has always been known for is inspirational stories. It seems that one of these stories takes place every season. This season’s most inspirational story so far is that of Sam Sparks. This young singer was involved in a horrific accident, and his friend surprised him by signing him up to audition for the show.

What Happened To Sam Sparks From American Idol?
Sam Sparks is one of this year’s hopeful singers on American Idol and also this year’s top inspirational story. Every season, someone comes on with a story that brings tears to the judges’ eyes and earns their way through by delivering great auditions that are topped only by their stories.
Sam Sparks is a 25-year-old from Dardanelle, Arkansas. He never submitted his own name for the competition. His friend, Malik, signed him up and attended the audition with Sam. That is when they told his story. He had been building cars since he was a teenager, which was a big part of his life. It was also what changed his life two years ago.
“Two years ago, I was headed to a shop that was two miles away. It was rainy, it was a little bit wet,” Sam told the judges. “The vehicle had some kind of failure and lost control and blew off the road 35 yards or so and landed and then hit a parked car head-on.” He said he couldn’t move his legs after the accident and realized his back was broken.
“That left me paralyzed from the waist down.”
Malik continued the story and said he arrived at the scene and saw Sam in the car screaming in pain. “That scream sets with me at all times,” Malik said. “I knew at that moment that his life was going to be different, but I knew music was going to get him through whatever he had to get through.”
Sam Spark’s American Idol Audition
Sam Sparks told the American Idol judges that he had a guitar in the hospital and would play in the parking garage so he wouldn’t bother people. He said that playing the music he wrote got him through this challenging time in his life. For his audition, he sang an original song called “Colorado Gray.”
Carrie Underwood said she liked the song and his voice and feels he has something in him that she wants to hear more. Luke Bryan said that he enjoyed hearing a rock voice with a country twang that isn’t like anything they have in the current competition. Lionel then called in Malik.
The judges told Sam to hang onto Malik because everyone needs a friend like him. They then all gave him yes votes and sent him on to Hollywood. That is when Lionel Richie personally handed him the ticket and said, “Well done. You killed it.”
