‘The Rookie’: Does James Actually Die?

Fans of The Rookie recently saw things take a dark turn for James Murray. Recent events saw the character placed in mortal danger after an intense moment. As fans have been following along to learn the character’s fate, they’ve also been sharing what they think the outcome should be.
A Recent Cliffhanger On The Rookie Left James Murray Clinging To His Life
On The Rookie, James is a recurring character played by actor Arjay Smith. He is married to Nyla Harper, with the two tying the knot in Season 4, and runs a community center.
However, with Season 7, James recently faced great danger on the series. In fact, fans of the series are starting to worry if they’ve soon seen the last of the character.

In the seventh season’s eighth episode, “Wildfire,” James helps out a friend and community center volunteer Kylie, who has recently been caught up with gang activity. During the episode, the two are attacked by a drive-by shooter, leaving James clinging to life. The two are eventually rushed to the hospital after being discovered by Celina.
Even by the end of the episode, fans are still left wondering if James will survive. Notably, this also occurs after a tense moment. Before the shooting, Kylie kissed James, with Nolan watching things before James pulled away.
The following episode, “The Kiss,” continues to see James in a serious condition. As the title reveals, the kiss becomes a topic of discussion, as it could have been a possible motive for the shooting.

The question of whether or not he would survive the ordeal still drove the story well past the initial cliffhanger. As noted by Distractify, however, towards the end of “This Kiss,” it’s revealed that James ultimately survived his injuries.
James’ fate is later confirmed in the following episode, “Chaos Agent, where he has been released from the hospital. Later, James is seen arriving home.
While James survived, there is still lingering drama. In addition to James enduring the fallout of a near-death experience and recovery, there is also potential for further drama from this kiss that occurred before the shooting.
Fans Also Shared Their Thoughts On The Character’s Fate On Social Media
Before the character’s fate was assured, fans took to social media to speculate what would happen. At the time, many fans not only questioned if James would die, but also wondered what would be best for the show.
Interestingly, not all fans were against the idea of the character being killed off. On social media, one fan shared, “This is probably a good time to send off James. I know The Rookie fans are not fans of him and they have kind of led up this death/injury throughout season 7 with the fights between him and Harper.”

While a lot of fans shared that they disliked the character, they didn’t necessarily think it would be for the best to kill off the character. For some, the toll his death would take on Nyla. Some comments included:
- “I am not a fan of his constant need to tear down her job that she loves. But I’m a softy and I’d hate to see their children fatherless just because I don’t want to see them bickering about it all the time.”
- “I don’t think he will die. I am definitely not a fan of the guy, but he’s important to Nyla’s storyline.”
- “I don’t like James, he and Nyla are too different and have no chemistry. Like Wesley and Angela are complete opposites but are amazing together.”
- “But he has a full family- James isn’t evil and he didn’t cheat on Nyla did he?”
- “I feel like all of these characters have way too much plot armor. They need to kill somebody off. Better him than one of our favorites.”
