Fans Noticed A Schedule Change On Saturdays On HGTV

HGTV, which launched in 1994, is known for its home renovation and real estate-themed programming. After all, the network’s name stands for “Home & Garden Television.”

Taking to social media, however, one fan wasn’t too happy with the current state of HGTV. As they I go to the gym and when I’m on the treadmill I like to watch HGTV.”

However, the fan claimed, “But recently, I have noticed that they’re now showing movies.” Saying “sorry,” the fan described these as “crappy movies” that they had “no desire to watch.”

The fan made a connection to another channel that famously changed over the years. They noted, “Why are they doing this? And is this going to end up being like MTV?”

“For those who are not old enough to remember, MTV used to show actual music videos 24/7. So will HGTV end up no longer showing home and garden shows?”

As noted by Home Beautiful, viewers noticed movies appearing on the network’s schedule at the start of the year. the channel was airing the 2015 film The Intern, which starred Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, during its weekend schedule. Normally, HGTV airs reruns of its popular shows during this time.

At the time, a few Saturdays were airing movies. This included scheduled airings of The American President and The Notebook.

On the recent post, however, fans were mixed on the issue. One fan noted this is a common practice and networks have their reasons to mix up the schedule. However, they also felt it was important to keep things on brand.

Some Fans Wouldn’t Mind The Secret Garden Or Other Movies That Fit HGTV’s Tone

This fan shared, “These stations need better back up plans. If they start to have low ratings due to streaming etc then they should find better alternatives to air that will be profitable for them. Even if it’s retro series, why not? Or see if they can get the rights to air shows from other countries.”

“Or perhaps, if they can get permission to use the online designers who post on YouTube, etc. Whatever works for them. But they should keep it somewhat in the realm of what HGTV is all about , otherwise why would we watch it?”

Some fans shared why they think this is going on. A few comments even suggested contacting HGTV directly, with fans sharing how they feel. Some comments included:

  • “Go to HGTV’s site and tell them what you prefer to watch in place of old movies. They will not be utilizing YouTube content and they are very hesitant to try out new talent.”
  • “It’s awful. I don’t bother with HGTV from Friday through Sunday.”
  • “I can say that the shows I have worked on in the past possibly are going away (for various reasons). Lots of TV people I know are out of work. Lots of possible cancellations. Lots of networks (it looks like) are having a hard time keeping budgets for Cable shows that are now mainly watched via streaming.”
  • “If you love HGTV shows, you should let advertisers know. When I’ve worked for a network (as opposed to a production house) in the past, they are just filling times slots they have nothing for with movies.”
  • “It wouldn’t be so bad if it was home and garden related movies like The Money Pit or The Secret Garden. But The Bodyguard?”
