‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Kate Walsh Talks Brain Tumor Diagnosis

Former Grey’s Anatomy star, Kate Walsh, showed up on The Kelly Clarkson Show this last week and shared a personal story with her fans. The actress sat down and had a deep discussion about her brain tumor. She talked about how she realized something was wrong and what happened next in her battle.
Here is what Kate had to say about the tumor and how the actress is doing now.
Kate Walsh On Discovering She Had A Brain Tumor
It seems sadly ironic that an actress who had her greatest success on a medical drama playing a world-renowned physician would end up learning she had a brain tumor. Even more distressing was that she didn’t know for a while, and people kept telling her it was something else.
Kate Walsh learned 10 years ago that she had a brain tumor. The actress didn’t appear in Season 20 or Season 21 of Grey’s Anatomy, and she took time off from the medical drama to deal with her health and well being. Kate, 57, said she was “fortunate” during the health scare when the warning signs were subtle.
Many excuses stopped her from checking with a doctor on what was wrong. She said she was just “really tired.” However, after a while, she noticed that the right side of her body was “dipping” (via YouTube). She also said people kept telling her to stop worrying and that she was okay.
People told her she was “just depressed.” Her TV show, Bad Judge, had just gotten canceled, and they said that was likely the problem.
She said she was walking her dog one day and thought the “street must be windy.” Then, she thought it was ADD, and she started to realize something was wrong. “I can’t really focus. Oh I’ve been scrolling too much.’ That kind of stuff,” she said. Finally, she went to the doctor and learned she had a brain tumor.
What Happened With Kate Walsh’s Brain Tumor?
Kate Walsh received a medical examination, and doctors found a brain tumor in 2015. She said it was the size of a lemon. She said she was exhausted and finally stopped listening to everyone and went to professionals for help. When she couldn’t “find my words” anymore, it was time to get assistance.
There was good news. The brain tumor was benign, and they removed it. This means it was non-cancerous, which is the most common type of primary brain tumor. The tumor was a meningioma, and John Hopkins Medicine says, “Meningiomas grow out of the middle layer of the meninges called the arachnoid. They grow slowly and may exist for years before being detected.”
This was great news for Walsh, who said her family has a history of cancer. Her mother was a breast cancer survivor, and her father died from lung cancer. “It’s a hard thing when you have everybody looking at you going, ‘Hmm, I think you’re just this or that. You’re tired,’” she said.
