‘Beyond The Gates’ Karla Mosley Reveals She’s Queer, Talks Transgender Role
Actress Karla Mosley has had a prominent career in soaps, from The Bold and the Beautiful to CBS’ more recent daytime drama, Beyond the Gates. Recently, the actress looked back on one of her earlier roles: Maya Avant, who came out as transgender on the soap. Notably, she talked about what it was like playing a transgender character, the impact it had, and if she would do so again.
Karla Mosley Has Made A Name For Herself In A Variety Of Soaps
Mosley got her start in the American version of the Australian children’s series, Hi-5. However, later in the decade, she would find success with daytime television.
In 2008, Mosley took on the role of Christina Boudreau on Guiding Light. In 2013, she would play Maya Avant on The Bold and the Beautiful.
In 2024, Mosley joined the cast of Dani Dupree on Beyond the Gates. Recently, the star spoke with People about her career in soaps, even revealing why she walked away from one of her earlier roles.
Mosley’s Bold and the Beautiful character Maya, which she performed from 2013 to 2019, came out as transgender in 2015. Playing the character for around three to four years, Mosley admitted her feelings about continuing on in the role after the reveal.
Mosley Noted The Impact Her Bold & The Beautiful Character Had
The actress admitted she was hesitant. As she shared, “When my boss asked me if I would do this story, I first was going to say no because it felt inappropriate for me to play that role as a cis woman. I do identify as queer, but I’m not transgender.”
Despite her reservations on playing a transgender character, Mosley felt the story ultimately needed to be told. She noted, “‘If you don’t accept this story, this story won’t be told.'”

The actress also highlighted the response she got from fans over the story. She noted it gave her an opportunity to answer questions. As she shared, “I just fielded questions for hours. I was like ‘Here’s a resource, here’s what this means.’ It was such a powerful moment.”
“I am so grateful for that character because people who loved Maya and then had issues with what she said had to ask themselves like, even with a family member, ‘Well, if I loved her yesterday, why don’t I love her today?’ I actually had to grapple with that question, and I had so much feedback around healing that was able to happen within families and communities because of that storyline.”
Karla Mosley Talked On Whether Or Not She Would Play Another Transgender Character
However, Mosley felt she wouldn’t be up for playing another transgender character in the future. She noted, “At a certain point it really became truly inappropriate for me to play that role. That’s why I stepped away from it. So no, I will not be playing another trans role.”
That said, the actress shared she still wanted to play characters who help make an impact like Maya. She noted, “I would love to play a role with the kind of gravitas and importance that Maya had for sure.”
