Ricko DeWilde’s Inspiration For “HYDZ”
“HYDZ” gear is something that Life Below Zero star Ricko DeWilde created to show his love for traditional Native American clothing. According to Ricko, “I do have a clothing line called HYDZ, which means animal hides which is the clothing of all human beings ancestors. I started this clothing line after designing some sweaters for my late family members traditional Athabascan memorial potlatch.”

On the official website where Ricko sells the clothing, he describes his history, legacy, and what “HYDZ” means to him in more detail. Ricko is an Athabascan Indian raised 100 miles up the river from the small village of Huslia, Alaska.
His parents raised him to hunt, trap, farm, and gather, which was how they survived. His mother taught him how to make fish nets, snare and hunt animals, and make clothing, blankets, and more from the hair of the animals. Ricko’s dad taught him how to build boats, canoes, fish traps, and more to ensure they caught animals needed to provide material for clothing.

His parents, older sister, and grandmother all passed away in recent years. His society has a memorial potlatch two years after the death of family members. He wanted to design sweaters for the potlatch to represent what his family believed in.
“I believe too much art and themes of the Native Americans today display an old, wrinkled, broken warrior, or spiritual, but, timid Native who is vulnerable to the elements of today,” he wrote. “I feel that, like me, many of my people are ready to take on new challenges and fight for a spot in this world today and build something for the future of our children.”

In June 2007, Ricko handed out 25 hooded sweatshirts to his family and friends. People loved the shirts. That inspired him to start his business selling HYDZ. He named it after the importance of animal hides in his life. “I was created and raised by my parents in a strong Native American culture,” Ricko said. “I created designs to represent who they were and to thank them for what they had done for me.”
