‘Deadliest Catch’ Captain Has A Shocking Second Job
The cast of Deadliest Catch works in one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. While it is seasonal, the crew likely needs time to rest and relax after spending months fighting dangerous waters to make their quota of crab fishing. However, it seems that at least one captain from the reality TV show has a surprising second job – one that is much less dangerous.
Here is what Captain Johnathan Hillstrand also does for a living when not captaining the F/V Time Bandit.
Captain Johnathan Has An Interesting Job Other Than Deadliest Catch
Captains Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand lead the crew on the F/V Time Bandit. a 113-foot house aft boat designed by their father. The boat’s interior includes things not expected in a crap boat-a four-man sauna, staterooms with queen-size beds, and a dishwasher. This comfort makes Johnathan’s second job possibly easier to do.
Captain Johnathan is also a children’s book author and illustrator. He writes the

The captain also has a book he co-wrote with his brother called Time Bandit: Two Brothers, the Bering Sea, and One of the World’s Deadliest Jobs. As expected based on the title, this book is about their job on Deadliest Catch. However, that specific book was published in 2008.

Johnathan Hillstrand Talks Children’s Books
When it comes to authoring children’s books, Johnathan Hillstrand had drawn since he was young and it just came naturally to him. It also comes from his family. His mother, Joan Phillips, ran the Homer Time Bandit store (via Anchorage Daily News).
“My mom wanted me to illustrate a kid’s book,” Hillstrand said about the books. “One thing led to the next.” Adventures of Little Bird tells the story of a parrot, Little Bird, who asks his parents if he can be whatever he wants to be. He decides to be a pirate.
“No matter what you want, if you put your mind to it, you can be what you want to be,” Hillstrand said.
There are also fun Easter eggs in the books. There is a character named Sig the Starfish, clearly named after Captain Sig Hansen.
