NCIS: Origins appears to be doing well on its Monday night slot on CBS. However, the series appears to be taking a break for the next few weeks. Some fans are left wondering just why the prequel series appears to be on hiatus.

NCIS: Origins Took A Break For President’s Day, & The Week Later

Serving as a prequel to the original NCIS, the series takes place in 1991. It looks into the life of Leroy Jethro Gibbs during his time as a Probationary NIS Agent.

Meanwhile, Gibbs is still haunted by the murder of his family. The series also touches on other characters from Gibbs’ past, such as his best friend Mike Franks.

However, the prequel series appears to be taking a break. There wasn’t a new episode on Monday, February 17.

It makes sense that the show took a break, as it was President’s Day. After all, the parent series, NCIS, will also be airing a repeat episode. This allows fans of both shows to enjoy the holiday without missing the show.

However, NCIS: Origins won’t air a new episode the following week on February 24, either. Instead, CBS will air an episode of the new show, Watson. The new series is a medical crime drama revolving around the Sherlock Holmes character, with Morris Chestnut in the title role.

That means that there won’t be any new episodes of NCIS: Origins for the rest of February. As noted by Just Jared, however, NCIS will still air a new episode that date.

This has some fans worried that the series could be in trouble. However, there could be an underlying reason the series is taking its current break.

As noted by Monsters & Critics, the series currently has an order of 18 episodes. Normally, a series like this gets an order of 22 to 24 episodes to make a full season.

It Might Take Some Time Before Fans Know If NCIS: Origins Is Getting Renewed

Thanks to this, CBS simply has to stretch out the series as long as it can. This allows the series to have mid-season premieres and season finales alongside other similar shows. Notably, the season’s remaining five episodes will air this spring.

This means NCIS: Origins fans shouldn’t be worried that the series is in any danger for now. The publication noted that a renewal is likely given the series’ popularity, especially with it following NCIS.

On the other hand, as the publication noted, the series’ darker themes might turn off some fans. However, any announcement concerning renewals is likely months away.

  1. Origins is the most intriguing new show in years. The characters make up a terrific blend, plots are well-built, the writing is cerebral, and the ongoing stories keep us involved from week to week.
Watson, on the other hand, does not have the smart balance of characters, and the writing isn’t clear. This show doesn’t hold my interest. It jumps around too much.
    Keep showing Origins!
