Katie Thurston Reveals What Led Her To Breast Cancer Discovery
Bachelorette Katie Thurston shocked Bachelor Nation on Saturday when she revealed being diagnosed with breast cancer. She is now sharing even more about her diagnosis and how she discovered it. Katie is now in the process of preparing to get treatment and determine whether or not the aggressive disease has spread. What did she share with fans? Keep reading to find out more.
Katie Thurston Opens Up More About How She Discovered Cancer
Bachelorette Katie Thurston revealed a devastating diagnosis of breast cancer. She is currently working on getting more testing scheduled to determine if the cancer has spread anywhere else. As she’s preparing to head to California for treatment, she is sharing more about how she found the cancer and what led her to get it checked out.
Katie went to Instagram to share more after fans had many questions for her. Of course, everyone wanted to know how she found it. She revealed finding it herself. She first had a scan done in the summer of 2024 and they told her to get checked just to explore it more. However, she had previously had a benign lumpectomy on the same side and felt no lump at that time. So, she thought it was probably scar tissue.
Fast forward, she did feel a lump and it was larger than the one she felt with the benign cyst. The first one was pea-sized while the second was ping pong size. She first thought it could be another benign cyst or possibly even PMS or a sore muscle from working out. It was painful on and off and as she read most breast cancers do not hurt.
So, she let it go and continued to monitor it. After three or four months it was still there so she became uneasy about it and went to the doctor.
What Happened Next?
After Katie Thurston saw her doctor, she got a breast ultrasound. After that, she went for a mammogram which led to multiple biopsies. She later got the confirmation that at age 34 she has breast cancer.
Katie also revealed that her cancer is hormone-positive so she immediately stopped taking birth control. She also was previously told that she did not have the BRCA gene. Plus, there is no history of breast cancer in her family. This was a complete shock to Katie.
She is having another biopsy on her lymph node which help them determine what stage she has. An MRI will also be completed to determine if it has spread to any other parts of her body.
What Are Katie’s Next Steps For Treatment
Katie Thurston has been in the process of moving to New York to be with her fiance Jeff Arcuri. However, her health insurance is still active in California and not yet in New York. So, she will be staying in California for a bit to get the ball rolling on treatment.
She revealed that she will be having a mastectomy and also chemotherapy so she is seeking help from her fertility specialist to freeze her eggs.
Through it all, she is grateful to have Jeff by her side. He is her biggest supporter and Katie is ready to fight this with all she has.
