Disney is set to release a live-action adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the animated film that effectively created the company. However, the project has been the subject of criticism for quite some time. This negative reaction has since ensued following the recent release of a new short trailer for the film.

Snow White Was Originally Intended For A 2024 Release

Disney’s Snow White is a live-action remake of the classic 1937 animated film. Based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, the original animated film sees the titular princess finding refuge with seven dwarfs while evading the murderous schemes of her evil stepmother.

The film reflects a trend of Disney in recent years, seeing live-action adaptations of their famous animated properties. Other similar projects include 2015’s Cinderella, 2023’s The Little Mermaid, and 2014’s Maleficent, based on the villainess from 1959’s Sleeping Beauty.

For many Disney fans, these live-action adaptations have been controversial. Some fans have accused them of overshadowing Disney’s animated projects or exploiting nostalgia. However, the Snow White adaptation has been especially controversial among fans.

As noted by Whiskey Riff, one bad sign for the film is that its release had been pushed back a whole year. The film was initially intended for a March 2024 release. However, it now seeks a March 2025 debut. On its end, Disney has attributed this to the SAG-AFTRA Strike back in 2023.

The Film Had Been The Subject Of Quite A Few Controversies

In addition, the film has also been the subject of various controversies over the past few years. As the publication noted, actress Rachel Zegler, who plays the live-action Snow White, has received criticism for comments made while promoting the film

Zegler has notably been critical of the 1937 film. In some comments, she implied the prince saving Snow White was outdated and compared him to a stalker. Zegler also highlighted that the modern film would omit the prince waking Snow White up with a kiss.

Another issue for the film has been the subject of Snow White’s dwarf friends. As noted by Forbes, the inclusion of dwarfs had been criticized by Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage, who called the original film a “backward story of seven dwarfs living in a cave together.”

A Short Trailer Was Recently Released On Valentine’s Day

Since then, there had been controversy over how Disney would handle the situation, possibly rewriting the dwarfs as something else. As seen in the final trailer, Snow White’s dwarf friends were rendered using CGI.

However, this has also drawn out controversy, with some feeling that it cheated real dwarf actors out of a role. Notably, pro wrestler Hornswoggle previously commented that Dinklage’s comments could cost “seven potential dwarfing dream jobs from the dwarf acting community.” Hornswoggle later asked, “Why is [Dinklage] the single voice for a whole community?”

A short trailer recently released on Valentine’s Day hasn’t done much to calm down criticism. After the trailer was released on X, many took to the comments to share their dissatisfaction with the upcoming film.

  • “Between this and the new Captain America you would have thought Disney would learn but you won’t.”
  • “This movie should come with a disclaimer that no dwarves were harm, but your childhood maybe.”
  • “I hate you all ruined Snow White. She is no longer the character Disney was built on, you stripped her of her innocence. And all for a manufactured social media movement.”
  • “All these live action movies keep making Disney worse.”
  • “No way in h*** I’m gonna show this to my daughter! The OG is the only way.”
