Viewers have turned into The Curse of Oak Island to see a variety of discoveries over the years. However, a recent find on the show left a few fans confused. Following this, a lot of fans are left wondering if they can trust the series. Others, however, have their own explanations.

Fans Had A Few Questions Concerning Shots On The Curse of Oak Island

The Curse of Oak Island is a History series that sees a group of treasure hunters on the titular Oak Island. Led by brothers Marty and Rick Lagina, the group searches for artifacts, all the while looking into the history of the area.

Over the years, stories claim hidden treasures are kept on the island. Indeed, since the show’s start in 2014, viewers have seen various finds. However, fans have often had their doubts over which finds are authentic or if the treasure, if there ever was one to begin with, is still in the area.

As noted by Monsters & Critics, one recent find on the series really has left fans wondering what is true or not. During the eleventh episode of Season 12, team member Katya Drayton could be seen finding a lead artifact from a possible treasure vault.

However, fans claimed to have picked up on a few unusual things about the sequence. Drayton’s gloves appeared to change positions in-between shots. Added to that, some thought the artifacts looked too clean despite recently being unearthed.

On Reddit, Some Fans Thought Things Were More Complicated

This brought about further discussion that the artifact might have been placed in the area so the show could “uncover” it. This brought about a discussion on Reddit, where fans shared possible explanations.

The Reddit post notably shared a YouTube video from ‘TheHiltnerds’ that discussed the series. In it, the video talked about the series possibly planting artifacts.

However, as many fans on Reddit pointed out, it isn’t unheard of for reality shows to reenact scenes so they would look better on film. At times, this could even be done after the fact due to an issue while filming.

Fans Weighed In On The Issue, With Some Thinking The Show Would Plant Better Artifacts

As one user wrote, “Yeah, as a guy with filming for TV experience, I am sure it was a glitch in capture that had to be reshot. Stuff happens. but it’s going to cost the show a lot of credibility. Unbelievable they let that get by.”

Another user felt this was the likely scenario. As they put it, “Eh, they probably didn’t get a good shot of it coming out the first time, so they reshot it. This is pretty common, TBH.”

As the comments continued, many agreed it wouldn’t have been worth the effort to completely stage what happened. However, others began to question just what was real on the show. Some comments included:

  • “I honestly don’t think anyone brought in that little chunk of lead and planted it in the old swamp toilet. If for no other reason than that it is too boring of a thing to plant.”
  • “A gold coin would’ve been really suspicious.”
  • “Yeah, if it was something really unique, interesting, and out of place, I might think it was a bit off. But a misshapen bit of lead accidentally dropped in a pit, meh.”
  • “Yeah they find and then do a number of reshoots. They’ve admitted this.”
  • “Most likely they found it when the cameras weren’t rolling. The crew probably asked her to find it again.”
  • “When I saw this happen on the show, it made me rethink all of their findings now”
  • “Don’t you think they’d plant better artifacts?”

  1. There have been several times where staging happened without a doubt. I do not think it was due to artifact seeding though, as much as it was intended to highlight the show’s cast of characters. Ms. Drayton was a new addition and allowing her to “find” the artifact was, I believe, staged after actual discovery. When in an earlier episodewe saw a huge rock lifted and an interesting find pulled from underneath, it was one of the brothers who jumped in and “discovered” it. The same can be seen when one of the brothers comes to lot 5 and immediately discovers some important thing. The archaeologists would have already found the object. Its their $, let them claim any glory. This is just cinematic in nature, not nefarious lies in my opinion. Gary Drayton is not the Lone Detector that found all the hits with all the flags. He is the star that comes in, waves a detector over a known hit, and lets Jack peform his manual labor role. I don’t care if they find treasures. As long as I am engaged and entertained by the history of it (see name of the network), if Trudeau and Trump show up and “discover” a treasure I do not care. I am old enough to understand Entertainment vs Science, and to know they are not always mutually exclusive.

    1. The show has been dragged out far too long and the 32 minutes of commercials doesnt help very much–I record it and edit out the BS and can watch the entire episode in a little more than 20 minutes! The real treasure is how much money the Lagina’s have made off of the show and in the end what they really find is a bunch of artifacts of historical significance, but ….no treasure!

  2. I am getting pretty bored with this program. They only find wood, iron, and ox shoes, and a little leather. If there ever was a treasure, I’m sure it’s long gone. Haven’t they spent much more than could ever have been recovered?

  3. They found a Pipe Stem amazing. This show has to be written and as small as the area is they are looking in and they can’t find anything of value? More fiction then reality.

  4. They have spent too much time drilling, they should try some strip mining techniques. That would get them down to the level of the supposed treasure much faster! We have strip mines in Kentucky that are hundreds of feet deep.

  5. I visited the island in 67 at the invitation of the guy running a drill. He said he saw small pieces of gold chain in one core sample. The drill was set up near the water. I only stayed for few minutes but don’t remember seeing houses on the island. It was an interesting visit anyway.

  6. What is truly frustrating to me, is they take these trips to Italy, Portugal, etc. and now Malta. And just burn time for no apparent reason. Find the treasure then identify where it is from. Their approach is backwards and seems to be of no benefit except to stretch out the already painfully repetitive episodes. How many times has the narrator spent time going through some part of the history of any little fact about Oak Island. I have watched this show since it’s inception and it is harder and harder to remain interested due to all this repetition.

  7. My husband has watched this show from its inception. At this time, he is thoroughly disgusted and feels that they are soaking up tv time with no value. I just make the action of a fly fisherman every time the show ends. Show you respect your audience and just wrap it up, you’ve made enough money.

  8. Sorry people but Nova Scotia news said they found only a small treasure in 2024!!! so why are they continuing the season in 2025 ? What a waste of time they sucked me for 12 seasons.

  9. I don’t know when I started watching but I know it’s been several, long, drawn out years. This last episode they show the map of the island of the diggings, it’s just a MESS – they’ve practically dug up the entire area. They had a special company to dig down and build walls to hold back the water. I mean, come on, I would expect these guys to be experts and I really had high hopes they could seal it off. They have all of these high-tech companies that can’t get to anything =- yet years ago those
people used hand tools and it’s hard to believe the progress their pictures showed…When they pulled out the map this last episode, my husband and I had a good laugh. But from a professional point of view – I would think geologically, they are making these drilled holes a recipe for a big disaster and cave in. All of their close digging, I predict is going to cause a big sink hole. As of the show this week, I am no longer watching – We just can’t take the repetition and how no one there can look at the intensely crowded over-drawings and not see a potential disaster is beyond me.
