‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Mock James Holzhauer For ‘Low’ Winnings

The two best players in Jeopardy! history are James Holzhauer and Ken Jennings. Holzhauer had a 32-game winning streak and won a total of $2,464,213. Those numbers are second to Ken Jennings, who won $2,520,700 over 74 wins. Considering Holzhauer almost matched Jennings in winnings in less than half the games, it was an impressive performance.

However, some fans have figured out how much a Jeopardy! player could win in a single game and have trolled James on his “low” winnings.

What Is The Most A Jeopardy! Player Can Win In A Single Game?

While the Tournament of Champions is underway, one Jeopardy! fan decided to see what the maximum amount a person could win in one single game is. After he had laid out all his figures in Reddit thread, he revealed that a person could theoretically win $566,400 in a single game of Jeopardy!

Here is how the numbers lie out. In the regular Jeopardy! round, a player can win $35,600 by clearing all five categories and wagering everything on the Daily Double. Up next is the Double Jeopardy! round. A person could finish that with $283,200. This means clearing all six categories and wagering everything on the Daily Doubles.

Finally, the person would need to wager everything on the Final Jeopardy! round. If they get it right, they win $566,400 in the end. They admitted this would be impossible, but it was a “fun experiment.”

These numbers are huge, and no one has come close. Looking at James Holzhauer’s winnings, he averaged $75,362 per episode. James also holds the record for the biggest single-day win ever with $131,127. This led to several fans sending out some fun trolling to James:

  • “Interesting! This means that Holzhauer’s single game winning record of $131,127 was ~23% of the maximum single game earnings.”
  • “Ya hear that, Holzhauer? You’re goin’ DOWN!”
  • “The fool kept doing all this “strategy” stuff like trying to get the daily doubles early to make sure he controlled them, or having final wagers low enough to still win runaway games if he missed the FJ answer. Utter nonsense.”

What Are The Main Jeopardy! Records Including James Holzhauer’s?

As mentioned, James Holzhauer holds the record for the highest single-game total in Jeopardy! history. That total is $131,127. That is impressive, but even more impressive is that James holds every spot in the top 10 single-game winning records, with the 10th place being $89,229.

Neither James Holzhauer nor Ken Jennings holds the record for the all-time total winnings. Instead, Brad Rutter holds that record with $4,953,436, with is almost $600,000 more than Jennings’ second-place finish with $4,372,700. That is because Brad’s totals include consolation money. For Ken, he has the highest total winnings without consolation money at $2,520,700

Ken Jennings holds the biggest winning streak in regular play with 74 wins. Amy Schneider is in second place (40 wins), Matt Amodio is third with 38, and James Holzhauer is fourth with 32.
