‘Deadliest Catch’ Fans Bash Handling Of Nick Mavar Memorial
This last week on Deadliest Catch, the Discovery Channel reality TV show paid tribute to a former star. Nick Mavar died last year, and this week the show was able to offer up a memorial to the star. This touched one viewer who went to Reddit to discuss it. However, what they found were other Redditors who felt the show disrespected Nick.

Deadliest Catch‘s Nick Mavar Died In 2024
Nick Mavar died last June at the age of 59. He was a long-time deckhand for the F/V Northwestern and appeared in about 100 episodes of Deadliest Catch over his career. Nick was one of the main deckhands and was a huge part of Captain Sig Hansen’s crew. He was mostly in charge of the mechanical equipment.
While he was around for most of the series, he ended up leaving the show in 2021. That was when he had an appendix emergency. He never returned. This might be one reason that many fans on Reddit said that this wasn’t a very good memorial. They even said he got less attention than some other cast members who were on fewer episodes.
After the OP of the thread complimented the memorial for Nick, others bashed the show:

He was on the show from the beginning and after leaving due to being medivacted for a ruptured spleen he was barely given a footnote for his passing meanwhile nick mcglashan and mahlon Reyes where only on the show for a few seasons and given a large final send off after their deaths”
- “I suspect that Nick filing suit against the F/V Northwestern, Deadliest Catch Productions and the contract medical provider probably played a big role in their ‘memorial.'”
- “It is extremely sad the way it went down, Nick Mavar should have gotten far more of a credit then he got.”
Who Else Died On Deadliest Catch?
As mentioned by the previous Redditors, Deadliest Catch offered sweet goodbyes for Nick McGlashan and Mahlon Reyes. Nick Maver died of a heart attack when he was 59.
Nick McGlashan was only 33 when he died following a drug overdose in 2021. Mahlon Reyes also died of a drug overdose at the age of 38. The Redditors felt it was wrong that Deadliest Catch gave more of a tribute to people who died from drug overdoses than they did to someone who was on the show for several seasons and died of a heart attack.
Other people who died from the show include Todd Kochutin, who died after an accident on the F/V Patricia Lee and Captain Phil Harris, who died following a stroke.
