Whoopi Goldberg Explains Beyonce’s Success At The Grammys
Traditional country fans were angry when Beyonce won the Grammy Award for Country Music Album of the Year. However, things went even further when one news opinion show began to make claims that the Grammys favored Beyonce over “more deserving” musical artists.
Whoopi Goldberg stepped up and made a strong argument that the latter complaints were not only wrong but based on a false narrative. Here is what Whoopi said about the Grammys.
What Are Critics Saying About Beyonce & The Grammys?
Beyonce won three new Grammy Awards in 2025. This means she has won a total of 35 Grammys over her career in music. She won her first-ever Album of the Year. She also won Best Country Album for her release, Cowboy Carter. This led to many people not thinking she deserved to win a country award despite her album being a country music album.

This led to a Fox opinion show with Laura Ingraham, where she and Raymond Arroyo spoke about Beyonce’s success at the Grammys. Arroyo made some comments that showed a lack of understanding about the Grammys, and especially the history fo the awards. Arroyo said, “Dolly Parton has 10 Grammys. Frank Sinatra had 11 Grammys. Beyonce has 35. How is that possibly commensurate with that talent?”
Arroyo then claimed that even “Lady Gaga’s cat sitter” votes for “best reggae and best country album. So that’s why you get this ridiculous outcome that has nothing to do with the country audience or the country musicians.” Of course, this is not true, as only the Recording Academy’s Voting membership, composed of music creators, including artists, producers, songwriters, and engineers, votes.
What Did Whoopi Goldberg Say ABotu Beyonce Critics
Whoopi Goldberg mostly dismissed Arroyo’s claims that Beyonce doesn’t have the talent needed to win Grammys. Instead, she focused on the fact that Arroyo doesn’t know anything about the Grammys or its history.

“Sir, are you aware that you have to be in the music industry to be a Grammy voter? So, the cat sitter can’t just vote?” Whoopi asked (via The Express). She then approached the idea of Beyonce winning more Grammys than people like Frank Sinatra.
In 1959, the Grammys had only 28 categories, which limited the number of Grammys an artist could win based on their categories. Whoopi mentioned that Frank Sinatra had two number-one albums in one year and received six nominations. However, she said the voters at that time only awarded him one Grammy—for his album cover.
Whoopi then emphasized that the Grammys now have 94 different categories. That means more chances for people to win. Alyssa Farah Griffin said, “She has been an icon for 25 years; she has put out 13 albums. This isn’t somebody who she’s only getting praise for this one album and this one moment. She’s been a generation for us.”
