Kelly Ripa Talks About Sobriety And Weight Gain

Kelly Ripa Quits Drinking Alcohol
Kelly Ripa recently opened up about her experience with weight gain after giving up alcohol, sharing her thoughts on the topic during an episode of Live with Kelly and Mark. On January 22, 2025, Ripa spoke with guest co-host Andy Cohen, who was filling in for her husband, Mark Consuelos. Cohen had been participating in “Sober January” and expected some weight loss, but, he shared that he did not see the results he had hoped for.
The conversation led to Kelly sharing her story of how cutting alcohol from her life actually caused her to gain weight, instead of her original expectation of losing it. Ripa is 54 years old and revealed she had gained 12 pounds after quitting alcohol. She had thoughts that if she were to stop drinking she would “magically” lose weight like others often claim happens when they cut alcohol. Instead of turning to healthy foods, Kelly found herself turning to sugary foods, which contributed to the weight gain.

Ripa Turns To Sugary Foods
Kelly Ripa jokingly said that people would tell her that cutting alcohol would make her “too skinny,” but that was not the case for her. She laughed about how she ended up eating more sugar. However, she did not see the weight loss many people expected to see from her. The TV host and Actress decided to stop drinking for good after a sober month with some of her friends in 2020. Ripa expressed that the change was not a big, dramatic decision and that it just simply felt right.
The actress just didn’t feel the need to drink anymore, and she noticed she felt better both mentally and physically without the hangovers. While Kelly was not a heavy drinker, she did admit that even having a couple of glasses of wine socially would leave her feeling drained the next day. So staying sober made her feel better overall. Ripa also mentions that her co-host Ryan Seacrest, likes to joke that he is the reason she stopped drinking. She very quickly clarified that her choice had nothing to do with him and was more about how she felt. Giving up alcohol was an easy positive choice for Kelly that has improved her life.
