Which soap operas are not going to be airing on Monday, January 20th? It is a big day not only because it’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day but also the Presidential inauguration. Due to this, many shows will be preempted as this takes precedence over regularly scheduled programming. That being said, will all soaps be preempted, or just a few? Keep reading for all of the details.

Which Soaps Not Airing Monday, January 20th?

It has been a rough several weeks for soap operas as they have either been on hiatus or have been preempted. Initially, it was due to the holidays which is fairly typical in the soap world. Soaps such as General Hospital and Bold and the Beautiful never take a break. Yet, when it comes to Christmas and New Year, they will make an exception and occasionally pull footage from the vault. Sports have also interfered which has made those who do not care for those activities slightly frustrated. Most recently, there was a one-day hiatus due to President Jimmy Carter’s funeral.

Events like that cannot be planned and the networks as well as the viewers just have to roll with it. As for Monday, January 20th, this has long been on the books. The new president will take the oath of office at his inauguration. Though it does not begin until noon EST, coverage will begin in the early hours of the morning. Different stations will be talking about the transition and have their cameras focused on the White House as everyone starts to arrive.

That being said, will there be any time for soaps that day? According to Soap Opera News, none of them will air on Monday. General Hospital, The Young and the Restless, and The Bold and the Beautiful will be preempted but just for January 20th. They will resume their regularly scheduled programming on Tuesday, January 21st. The only soap that is not impacted by this is Days of Our Lives and that is because it airs on Peacock. So, it will still stream.

Why Not Stream Them?

When preemptions happen,  soap fans ask why not put the shows on streamers. They make it a valid point that not everyone will be watching these events and they should be able to have stability with their stories. Fridays tend to be cliffhangers for soaps so to not have a show on Monday is difficult. For General Hospital, which is actively losing Chad Duell who plays Michael Corinthos, this is a pivotal time. On the Friday, January 17th episode, the episode reads like this:

“Jordan reads Drew the riot act; Lulu and Brook Lynn clash; Willow makes a big decision; Tracy lands in hot water; Ava is on a mission.”

For B&B, Brooke and Taylor faced off while on Y&R, Victor is suspicious of Nikki, Claire threatens Jordan, and Sharon struggles to escape. So, there will be a lot to catch up on when the soaps return on January 21st.
