‘Today’ Why Did Savannah Guthrie Bail On New Co-Host?
Craig Melvin recently took on co-hosting duties on Today following the departure of Hoda Kotb. In a recent episode, Melvin himself was seen without co-host Savannah Guthrie, mere days after he started in his new gig. This left some viewers wondering what happened to Guthrie.
Craig Melvin Teased ‘Three Days’ Of Him Was Enough For Savannah Guthrie
On January 13, 2025, Melvin officially took on co-hosting duties on Today alongside Savannah Guthrie following Hoda Kotb leaving the role. Melvin had previously been announced as Kotb’s replacement back in November.
This past Thursday, less than a week since he started in the role, Melvin replacing Kotb wasn’t the only change seen on the show. Laura Jarrett served as his co-host instead of Savannah Guthrie.
Jarrett isn’t exactly a new face, as she is is known as serving as a co-anchor for Today‘s Saturday editions. However, many viewers were left wondering what had happened to Guthrie.
As noted by People, Melvin made a joke about Guthrie’s absence. As he mused, “I know what you’re thinking, that after three days of Craig she decided to bail…”
This caused Jarrett to tease, “I wasn’t going to say it.” However, she also assured Melvin, “But it’s nice to be with you.”
That said, Melvin also offered a more genuine explanation for what happened. Early on, he shared, “Welcome to Today, so glad you’re with us on this busy Thursday morning. Laura Jarrett is in, Savannah’s a little under the weather.”
Guthrie Was Back On The Set By Friday
In reality, Melvin and Guthrie appear to already have a good working relationship. On his first day, Melvin was noted to have told Guthrie, “Let’s go. And there’s no one I would rather ride with than you.”
The two also made a recent appearance together on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Guthrie noted “This is the Craig Era. We’re in our Craig Era.”
As previously reported, Guthrie also gave fans an update about how what happened through Instagram Stories. In a recent post, she shared a screenshot of her Oura Ring, which read, “Your biometrics show major signs of something straining your body.” She also added, “Then succumbed to the norovirus blazing through my house.”
Notably, Guthrie was able to make a return to the Friday show. As noted by Hello! Magazine, she shared that the norovirus “blazed through the house but it was a quick mover.” However, she assured viewers that she and her husband Michael were “all better.”
