‘Hollywood Squares’ Fans Slam Reboot As ‘Epic Fail’
Hollywood Squares fans are slamming the game show reboot as an “epic fail.” The show premiered on Thursday, January 16th, a week later than anticipated. Unfortunately, those who had high expectations for the revival were less than thrilled with the outcome. Keep reading for more details on what they had to say.
Hollywood Squares Reboot Slammed As ‘Epic Fail’
Rebooted game shows can be hit or miss. Some do not even get a reboot but rather the torch gets passed. Such was the case with Drew Carey on The Price is Right who took over when Bob Barker retired. Let’s Make a Deal has been in the same boat and faced revival status but viewers have appreciated what Wayne Brady has brought to the table. Then, there are true rebooted game shows such as Press Your Luck. It was a hit in the eighties but Elizabeth Banks brought it back in 2019 and it has now run for six seasons.
Supermarket Sweep was a fan favorite but did not do so well when it was rebooted and that could be the same fate for Hollywood Squares. Fans were excited for the show to come back as it was so beloved for many years. It had been revived in the past and now, Drew Barrymore was joining the game show as the center square. There was so much anticipation revolving around it but sadly, it failed to live up to viewers’ expectations.
Two celebrity-filled episodes aired with Drew in the center, and Nate Burleson as the host. Celebrity squares included Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Whitney Cummings, Thomas Lennon, Ms. Pat, Tiffany Haddish, Tyra Banks, Jeff Ross, and Julie Bowen. According to Monsters & Critics, viewers felt it was more like a roast than a game show:
- Watching the new HOLLYWOOD Squares. It is way too loud, and mean. It’s like a roast and not a game show
- Well, so far, the new Hollywood Squares is an epic fail
- The hosting, the scripted banter, the party vibe, the lowbrow questions. All of it is gross
This Could Redeem Itself
Although the reboot was initially panned by many viewers, some genuinely appreciated what Hollywood Squares had to offer:

Drew Barrymore was a hit with viewers who found her to be a lot of fun and absolutely adorable. Maybe it just needs a few episodes to pick up steam. Plus, they need some time to work all of the kinks out and then they can have a successful reboot.

remakes of shows can never be like the original. I thought the new Hollywood squares gave something to watch instead of all the reality shows and some other dumb game shows. I for one liked the show. sad it did not last.
