Carrie Underwood Faces Backlash By LGBTQ+ Country Artists

Country singer and American Idol alum Carrie Underwood was recently confirmed to be performing at President-Elect Donald Trump’s upcoming 47th inauguration. Since the news had come out, the singer received backlash over the planned performance. The star herself has also recently released a statement explaining her decision to perform.
The American Idol Alum Is Set To Perform ‘America The Beautiful’
Trump’s inauguration is set for January 20, 2025, starting his term as the 47th president of the United States. Beforehand, Trump has served as the 45th president from 2017 to 2021.
During his swearing-in ceremony, Underwood is set to perform “America the Beautiful.” During the performance, the star is expected to be accompanied by the Armed Forces Chorus and the United States Naval Academy Glee Club.

As previously reported, many public figures have criticized Underwood for the planned performance. On The View, for example, co-host Joy Behar was quoted as saying, “I don’t understand how you say you love your country at the same time as you normalize this convicted felon,” in response to the news.
When discussing the matter, co-host Sunny Hostin noted “I think art is art and you have a right to perform.” However, she continued, “If I were asked, it would be a hard no.”
In a statement with Out, openly gay country singer and America’s Got Talent alum Kameron Ross claimed, “It’s really disheartening to see someone as huge as Carrie Underwood take such a stance.” As he continued, “It’s her solidifying the values (or lack of) that she stands for.”
Carrie Underwood Released A Statement Explaining Her Decision To Perform
The publication also released a statement from openly gay country singer Adam Mac. He noted Underwood “will always be an incredible talent. However, he noted, “I can’t help but feel let down by her decision to sing at the inauguration.”
As the publication noted, Underwood herself has also released a statement over her decision to perform at the inauguration. As the singer shared, “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration.”
Underwood also claimed to be honored “to be a small part of this historic event.” She continued, “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
As noted by NPR, other artists set to perform at the presidential inauguration include Christopher Macchio, Lee Greenwood, and Kid Rock. In a statement, Steve Witkoff and Kelly Loeffler shared, “The Trump Vance Inaugural Committee is proud to announce that some of our nation’s most iconic [musicians] will be participating in the inaugural celebrations.”
