‘Wheel of Fortune’ Awarded Contestant Win Despite ‘Incorrect’ Answer

On the January 10th episode of Wheel of Fortune, a controversial moment occurred involving the contestant Kiana Moreland. Kiana is a graduate of the University of La Verne. She’s from Grand Terrance, California Moreland recently got a doctorate in organizational leadership.  The puzzle in question was in the “Living Things” category, and Kiana correctly solved it as “Aardvarks and Antelopes.” However, the way Moreland worded the answer raised concern in the audience. Instead of just stating the answer Kiana phrased her response as a question instead of an answer saying “Is it Aardvarks and Antelopes?”

The way she worded it led fans to be confused and debating on whether or not she should get it correct despite the rules. On, Wheel of Fortune, contestants are expected to state their answers without adding extra words. In the past, any additional words, like “is it” or “our”, have led to answers being ruled incorrect. This rule is put in place to keep answers concise and clear. Viewers may have felt that Kiana’s phrasing should have disqualified her answer.

Frustrated Fans Speak Out

One fan took to Reddit to express their frustration. They wrote that they were certain the judges would rule Kiana’s response invalid but after a long pause from host Ryan Seacrest, the answer was deemed correct. Another viewer expressed disbelief, saying, “I was positive the judges were gonna rule her answer incorrect.” They also pointed out that the rule against extra words applied universally in all puzzles, so they felt the decision to allow Kiana’s response was inconsistent with how the show typically operates. Fans went to Reddit to join in on their opinions of what happened.

In the end, Moreland was awarded $1,950 for solving the puzzle correctly. Her winning the round left fans debating the results for a while in the Wheel of Fortune fan community.  A fan upsetly commented ” injustice the likes of which the world has never seen before!!” The Reddit comments revealed a broader debate about the rules and whether the show had become more flexible with enforcing them. Fans think that the ruling of this decision shows that the host was being more lenient than usual.

While some felt the answer should have been disqualified, while others argued that Kiana’s solution was still valid despite the question-like phrasing.
