Joy Behar Says Agent Told Her Not To Join ‘The View’

Fans either love or hate Joy Behar on The View. The daytime talk show star has a habit of saying whatever is on her mind without a filter. This makes her one of the more entertaining members of the cast, especially during hot-takes discussions. However, it turns out that she almost wasn’t on the show at all. Her agent warned her against accepting the role.

Here is what Joy said about what her agent told her about starring on The View.

Joy Behar Almost Said No To The View

Joy Behar was talking about her career on The View in her recent appearance on the show’s official Behind the Table podcast. She told the podcast’s host, Brian Teta, that her agent told her not to take the job on the daytime talk show. She said he told her no money was worth taking on this role.

“When I got this job — when was it? 1997? — I was sort of on the cusp of getting a sitcom. I had been in a sitcom already, and I’d done a pilot,” Behar said (via PEOPLE). She was working as a regular on a scripted TV show called Baby Boom, based on the 1987 film of the same name.

Joy got the call to appear on The View as a co-host alongside Barbara Walters. She then admitted her agent told her not to take the gig and to turn it down. Joy, 82, said her agent told her the pay wasn’t high enough.

“I said, ‘It’s in New York City with Barbara Walters; I don’t wanna live in L.A. I wanna live in New York City [and] work with Barbara Walters,’” Joy said. “Because I knew that it would be a smart show with her behind it.”

She said she rejected her agent’s advice and took the role, and the rest is history.

Joy Behar Said It Wasn’t Easy On The View

Joy Behar hears as many complaints as most women on The View. However, this is nothing new for her. She got a lot of pushback when she was a comedian before she joined The View. That pushback continued early on with her starring alongside Barbara Walters.

“I was just told by executives and network people and agents I was too New York — which I think is code for too Jewish or too ethnic,” Joy said. “I think that that was what even somebody even said when I got this show… “But it’s part of the country. You can’t have everybody coming from Iowa.”

What are your thoughts on Joy Behar’s performance as a host on The View? Are you surprised that her agent tried to convince her to turn the role down? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
