The Price Is Right

The Price Is Right is an American television game show where the contestants compete by guessing the prices of merchandise to win cash and prizes. A 1972 revival by Mark Goodson and Bill Todman of their 1956-1965 show of the same name. Contestants are selected from the studio audience. When the announcer calls their name, they use the show’s famous catchphrase ” Come on down!” In a recent episode, the new host Drew Carey was taken aback by the unexpected prices of two items during a Christmas-themed episode. The contestants, a couple named Kathleen and Stephen, were dressed as Santa’s helpers and had to guess the prices of a gravy boat with a warming base and a set of assorted candlesticks as part of the game’s Plinko segment. The couple was given a clue with two numbers for each item. For the gravy boat, the clue indicated that the price either started with a two or ended with a zero. Kathleen and Stephen guessed that it started with a two. However, when the price was revealed to be $80, Carey couldn’t hide his shock. He sarcastically commented

“What? 80 dollars? Im just gonna squeeze my gravy out of the bottle, thanks.”

The gravy boat’s price was much higher than the couple and Carey had anticipated.

The second item, a set of candlesticks, had a similar pricing surprise. The clue suggested the price either started with a one or ended with a four. The couple chose the latter. To their surprise, the price turned out to be just $18, which left Carey equally shocked. He playfully called out the producers who selected the items saying “ I see what you’re doing.” While staring into the camera.

Drew Carey’s Experience

Despite these surprises, the couple did have some success during the game. After correctly guessing the price of one or more items, they earned two Plinko chips. In the Plinko game, players drop the chips down a slanted board with various dollar amounts, ranging from $0 to $10,000, at the bottom. Although the odds of winning the highest prize were slim, Kathleen’s first chip landed on the $10,000 spot, and the second chip also landed on the largest prize resulting in $20,000 for the couple. Carey’s experience with unexpected prices doesn’t start with this episode. In a recent interview with TV Insider, he revealed that some contestants often compete under the influence of substances. He shared that it’s not unusual for contestants to come in smelling of alcohol or having consumed gummies. Carey recalled one memorable contestant who appeared to be under the influence of mushrooms. The contestant claimed he was a ” skateboarding rabbi” but didn’t mention his true profession during the competition.
