Grace was placed in a Ukrainian orphanage shortly after her birth and was diagnosed with a rare form of dwarfism. In 2010, she was adopted by an American family the Barnetts. However, the Barnetts later claimed that she was really a legal adult, even having her birth date legally changed.

As noted by People, Grace’s adoptive father, Bishop Antwon Mans could be heard saying in a voice-over for the show: “I feel like she’s the enemy in the house. And she said to us, we have held her hostage. Made us look like we’re the enemy.”

As the publication noted, Antwon learned Natalia was sharing messages with a man named Neil on Facebook. As he said in the series, “She’s got this dude online. He turned her against us. She’s ready to go to hell with gasoline panties on.”

A few days before Christmas 2023, Natalia planned an escape from the Mans family. Neil, who was based in the U.K., contacted Nicole DePaul, who wanted to adopt Natalia with her husband Vincent, but was turned down in 2009. He asked her to drive from the DePaul family home in upstate New York and pick up Natalia at a Nashville church.

Natalia then drove with Natalia back to New York and is now living with the DePauls. As Grace shared in the new season, “Once I got in [Nicole’s] car, I had to text my mom to let her know I wasn’t kidnapped or dead.”

Grace continued, “It was an emotional time. I had to spread my wings.” As seen, Natalia called up Neil to thank him for his help. As she noted, “Hey babe, I’m so, so thankful you found me.”

In a conversation with People, Nicole was initially caught off-guard by Neil’s involvement. She shared that, “At first, I was like, ‘I don’t know who you are,’ and I just thought it was just some person, and so I ignored Neil.”

“He finally sent me some proof that he was really him. Then I believed that I was talking to an actual person that knew Natalia.”

“[The Manses] took everything from Natalia. They go and change the payee to take all her social security money. It just all gave me the heebie-jeebies. It wasn’t right at all. I know for a fact they kept her secluded. She told us she got whippings by them.”
