CBS Anchor Greg Gumbel Passes Away At 78

CBS sports broadcaster Greg Gumbel, who covered NFL and college basketball for the network, has passed away. Gumbel notably served as part of the network for over two decades. He was 78 at the time of his passing.

Greg Gumbel’s Wife & Daughter Released A Statement

Sports coverage was something of a family business for Gumbel. He was notably the older brother of sportscaster Bryant Gumbel.

In fact, it was Bryant who told Greg about that the NBC-owned WMAQ-TV in Chicago was auditioning for a sports announcer. This served as his start in the world of sports coverage.

According to TV Line, CBS Sports confirmed Greg’s passing. A statement from Greg’s wife Marcy and his daughter Michelle was shared on X.

As the statement read, “It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband and father, Greg Gumbel. He passed away peacefully surrounded by much love after a courageous battle with cancer. Greg approached his illness like one would expect he would, with stoicism, grace and positivity.”

The statement continued that, Greg “leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry.” It was also noted that “his iconic voice will never be forgotten.”

Throughout His Career, Gumbel Worked With ESPN, NBC, & CBS

The statement concluded, saying, “Greg’s memory will forever be treasured by his family, dearest friends, colleagues and all who loved him.” As the publication noted, Greg was 78 at the time of his passing.

News of Greg’s death was first shared online by producer Dan Forer. In a statement, Forer shared, “The holidays are supposed to be filled with joy, but they are often mixed with sorrow. I just learned that my dear friend Greg Gumbel has passed.”

“Greg was the best announcer a young producer/director could have… In addition to being a true professional he was a kind, magnificent man. May his memory be a treasured blessing for his family and friends.”

Sad to share the death of Greg Gumbel, one of the best sports TV guys of all time. RIP.

Barstool Sports also shared a post honoring Gumbel since his passing. Featuring a black-and-white photo of the sports broadcaster, the caption read, “Rest in Peace, Greg Gumbel. A broadcasting legend.”

Gumbel has joined ESPN during 1979, its inaugural year. He moved onto CBS in 1988, where he would announce NFL games and college basketball. He also hosted The NFL Today.

Gumbel briefly worked with NBC before returning to CBS in 1998. He then became part of the network’s March Madness coverage in addition to announcing NFL games.
