‘DWTS’ Derek Hough Helped Julianne Through Tragic Double Deaths
Professional dancers Julianne and Derek Hough have had their share of issues over the years. But at the end of the day, they’ll always be there for one another.
See what Derek had to say about comforting his sister during an incredibly difficult chapter in her life.

Today, fans can catch the Hough siblings in starring roles on Dancing With The Stars. They’ve moved on from being pros and now serve as head judge and hostess.
Back in 2019, Julianne suffered an unimaginable tragedy. A pack of coyotes attacked and tragically killed her beloved dogs, Harley and Lexi. Of course, nothing could ease the pain of the insurmountable loss. But having the love and support of her family helped Julianne through this dark chapter.
“I think just like in any family situation, you rally, you know? You always come together,” Derek Hough told PEOPLE in a new interview. “So when that happened, we all rallied behind her, and we [were] there for her.”
“Families are always the ones that are there for you in difficult times, you know? And I think it’s in those moments you realize how wonderful family is,” Derek continued. “I was talking to this doctor, and he said he’s been at the bedside of thousands of patients basically on their deathbed. And none of them ask for their awards… accolades or their money… they ask for their loved ones, and it’s a good reminder. … Family’s so important.”

In September 2024, Julianne Hough reflected on five years without her sweet pets.
“September 28th, 2019 🕊️” the DWTS hostess shared on Instagram. “I love you Lexi and Harley ❤️ Hard to believe it’s been 5 years without you in this 3D world.”
She attached photos of the memories they made together and a few from the funeral she held for them.

Fans, friends, and family members left words of encouragement in the comments.
“I think of them often and my heart still aches from that traumatic day. These pictures of memories brings a huge smile to my face. Lexi’s ‘squishy face’ and Harley’s ‘crazy hair,'” Derek Hough shared. “Love them dearly. “Love you sis ❤️”
In the PEOPLE interview, Derek admitted that losing a pet feels very much like losing a beloved family member.
“I think anybody who really has had a pet that they’ve loved fully [understands] that,” the DWTS judge told the publication. “So that’s why you always want the best for them… you always want the best for them and look out for them and take care of them.”
