Why Garth Brooks Assault Suit Gets Paused In California
Country singer Garth Brooks has become the subject of sexual assault allegations from a former employee over the past few months. Since then, both the star and the stylist have made court filings against the other. However, a recent suit involving the allegations has been paused by a judge in California.
Garth Brooks Initially Filed A Suit Using A ‘John Doe’ Pseudonym
A stylist, identified as “Jane Doe,” sued Brooks back in October. At the time, she alleged he had assaulted her on a 2019 work trip to Los Angeles. She also alleged the star continued to attack her over the following months.
The stylist identified Brooks as having filed a suit against her a month prior using a “John Doe” alias. She also claimed that the suit, which was filed in a Mississippi federal court, was an attempt to silence her.
Meanwhile, the suit had accused her of threatening a California lawsuit against Brooks. It was claimed this was in retaliation for denying the stylist’s requests for a raise and health insurance. By October, Brooks filed an amendment using his real name, as well as the stylist’s, asking for the filing to be dismissed.
Brooks Was Accused Of ‘Forum-Shopping Maneuver’
Roe accused Brooks of performing a “forum-shopping maneuver” with the suit. As was argued, Brooks filed to prevent the stylist from gaining her preferred court. It also would prevent her access to California’s anti-SLAPP statute.
However, the California lawsuit, which concerns charges of sexual assault and battery, has since been paused, with Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald denying Brooks’ motion to dismiss the California suit without prejudice.
As explained by Bloomberg Law, a Mississippi judge will now determine whether or not the case will proceed. At this time, Brooks is represented by O’Melveny and Myers LLP. Roe will be represented by Girard Bengali APC, Wigdor LLP, and HB Advocates PLLC.
Roe herself lives in Mississippi, but claims the alleged incident took place in California. As noted by Rolling Stone, “The primary relevant events took place in Los Angeles, California. Not a single act or event underlying any alleged cause of action by Brooks occurred in Mississippi.”

As previously reported, Brooks has maintained various projects since the allegations have come out. Brooks recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! following reports that the country star’s performance had been cut.
Similarly, the star also announced the release of a new book, the latest installment in the Anthology series, back in November. As noted on Instagram, Brooks was also involved with an Amazon Music event, “The Anthology IV: Going Home.”
