‘Pop Culture Jeopardy!’ Called Out For Not Being Geeky Enough
Pop Culture Jeopardy! just released its second week of episodes. For fans who are not following along, the series is on Prime Video, and the streaming service is releasing three episodes a week for fans to watch at their leisure. This means there are now six episodes, and fans can decide if they are up to par with the original series.
However, not everyone is enthused about the new game show spinoff, and some complain that it doesn’t go quite far enough. Here is what you need to know.
Pop Culture Jeopardy! Not Geeky Enough?
Fans had two sets of complaints heading into the release of Pop Culture Jeopardy! The first was that it would dumb down the franchise since the original show was always considered difficult. Some fans thought pop culture questions were too low-brow. Others thought it might be too easy if all questions were based on entertainment.
However, Ken Jennings said that the show would be just as challenging as the original series. So far, that has proven true, with questions based on popular shows, movies, and songs, but they are often not the easiest to remember the answers to.
However, the big complaint since the show came out is that the questions don’t go quite far enough in the area of geek entertainment. One of the selling points for Pop Culture Jeopardy! was questions for people with a deep knowledge of movies, music, and pop culture. This is for people who know more about Star Wars than world geography.
The problem, according to AV Club in their review of the show, was that it “is too gimmicky, not nearly geeky enough, and reeks of recency bias.” The questions seem to veer too much toward the Internet crowd rather than the geek pop culture historians. The site also says that the producers are trying to add too much to the show rather than letting the game speak for itself:
“Instead of letting it be exactly what it is—an unabashedly nerdy trivia enterprise that allows culture vultures to flex the full range of their respective geekdom—producers have bloated the game with so many bits and bobs that it’s nearly unrecognizable.”
Reddit Fans Seem Intrigued By Pop Culture Jeopardy!
If there is one place on the Internet that celebrates Jeopardy!, it is Reddit. There are threads every day discussing the main show, with dozens upon dozens of fans intently talking about the show. Even the players join in on Reddit to talk about their experiences.
A fan recently asked on Reddit if the show was worth the watch and got a myriad of responses:
- “I’m lucky if I know the correct response to 15% of the regular Jeopardy! clues, but with pop culture it felt more like 50-60%. I actually feel like I have a chance so in that way I enjoyed it.”
- “It shakes up the formula with three-player teams and Triple Plays but doesn’t stray too far from the format of Jeopardy.”
- “It was fun I felt like I knew as many answers as I do on regular Jeopardy. But the answers I didn’t know made me feel incredibly dumb.”
