Drew Barrymore has made headlines for being too physical and touching guests on The Drew Barrymore Show against their wishes. Guest to her show such as Martha Stewart and Oprah Winfrey have asked Drew to keep her hands to herself. During a recent interview with Cynthia Erivo Barrymore addressed her need to touch people.

Drew Barrymore Gets Honest About Being Handsy

During the December 10th episode of The Drew Barrymore Show host Drew Barrymore spoke with Wicked actress Cynthia Erivo about being touchy-feely. Erivo shares a touchy-feely relationship with her co-star Ariana Grande. Barrymore asks Erivo about Ariana, “Is it true that she is as touchy?” Cynthia explained that she is “Used to” Grande constantly touching her. She further explained:

“If it’s not, like, connected, I’m like, ‘What’s wrong? What’s happening? Where are you?’ We walk hand in hand very often. Like, if we’re not walking hand in hand, we’ll find each other somewhere.”

They’re like, ‘Back off a little bit.’ I’m like, ‘Why?’” Erivo expressed that she feels people are often afraid of a physical connection. Barrymore echoed the sentiment and responded, “I think we assume that physical connection can only be romantic.” Cynthia said that she and Grande use physical touch as a form of communication.

While talking with Drew Barrymore Cynthia Erivo revealed that she and her Wicked co-star Ariana Grande prefer to use physical touch as a form of communication with one another. She expressed that they frequently touch one another, and feel uncomfortable without it. Erivo further explained:

“Sometimes you can’t say anything and you’re in a room and you’re like, it’s just a squeeze of a hand. And that sometimes is how she and I communicate… However we need to communicate is how we need to communicate, and I think we don’t give enough credit to how we need to communicate with our friends physically.”

Drew Barrymore agreed with Erivo. She responded that she would like to see a society where people “could all be more comfortable with physical touch.” Cynthia and Drew then embraced one another. Afterward, Barrymore said “I was just hugging you just now and I thought, ‘I am so lucky to embrace and actually physically be near someone who is breaking records.’” Erivo smiled and clasped Drew’s hands. The wholesome interaction was a joy for both actresses who enjoy physical touch as a form of communication.
