Lance Bass Reveals Controversial Reason Sitcom Pilot Was Axed
Lance Bass is probably still best known as a member of NSYNC. However, Bass once tried his hand at being the star of his own sitcom. The musician recently opened up about why his potential show ended up getting axed.
Lance Bass Talked About The Experience On A Podcast With Gov. Gavin Newsom
Bass was asked to audition for NSYNC back in 1995. The group ended up signing with RCA in 1997.
In addition to his music career, Bass has had other projects over the years. Notably, he competed on season 7 of Dancing with the Stars, ultimately earning third place. At one point, he even tried his hand at being a cosmonaut.
Bass has also had a few acting roles over the years. In fact, he recently claimed he once had the opportunity to star in his own sitcom for The CW. However, he claimed the series was canceled during the production of the pilot.
However, Bass discussed the story on an episode of the “Politickin’” podcast. As noted by Page Six, he appeared with Gov. Gavin Newsom, Marshawn Lynch, and Doug Hendrickson.
The Star Said That He Doesn’t Hold ‘Grudges’
During the appearance, Bass claimed that his then-recent coming out impacted the production. As he told the hosts, “We were about to shoot the pilot and this came out and they were like, ‘We can’t do the show anymore.’ They have to believe that you’re straight to play a straight character.”
The star claimed that executives told him, “I don’t know what we can do with you now.” He continued that, “Every casting director I knew, they’re like, ‘Lance, we can’t cast you because you’re too famous for being gay now that they can’t look at you as anything other than that.’”

This allegedly spurred Bass to “completely just restart and rebrand at that moment.” The publication noted that the sitcom pilot would have been canceled before the network obtained new ownership 17 years prior.
As Bass noted, NSYNC going on hiatus towards the start of the 2000s also left him in a complicated state. As he shared, “It was very confusing for me because I didn’t know where I belonged and I wasn’t really setting myself up for success because I was just waiting. It took awhile to figure out who I was and where I needed to go.”
Since the canceled project, however, Bass noted that he has been cast “in a lot of things since, which is really funny and ironic.” Despite this, he added, “I never hold grudges at all. I get it.”
