Many American Idol fans are unhappy that the singing competition show is starting later than usual this season. However, waiting for its premiere might be good for the show’s ratings. That is because the first season with Carrie Underwood as a judge will air immediately following the most-watched yearly awards show on TV.

Here is a look at when American Idol’s new season premieres and why it is a perfect night.

American Idol To Premiere Season 23 On Big Night

American Idol will not premiere its first episode until March of next year. Usually, the show premieres in February, and this season is the latest start outside of its early years. However, the reason for the late start might have just been revealed. It will follow one of the most-watched television awards shows.

The Academy Awards airs on March 2, 2025. ABC will use that highly-anticiapted awards show to promote the new American Idol season. Immediately following the Oscars, ABC will premiere a 30-minute preview of American Idol. The preview will air at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT following the live Oscar telecast (via THR).

However, it won’t be a full episode of the popular reality TV show. Instead, the half-hour preview will offer viewers the first look at Carrie Underwood and a few of the auditions from the early rounds of the competition. The first full episode of American Idol will air on March 9 and will likely be a full two hours.

The Academy Awards is set to start at 7/6 CST and run for three-and-a-half hours.

Will This Help American Idol?

American Idol is still one of television’s most popular reality singing competition shows. Many people complained about Katy Perry during her time on the show. With Carrie Underwood, a former Idol winner, replacing her, this could easily bring viewers back to the program.

At the same time, awards shows don’t get the same viewership they used to, but the Oscars are still considered the best of the best when it comes to awarding movies their honors each year. There will be lots of people watching it, and with a 30-minute preview after the telecast, ABC has a chance to promote Carrie’s arrival.

The Oscars could also see a boost in viewership this year if Wicked earns its expected nominations. There is a good chance it will earn nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress (Cynthia Erivo), and Best Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande). With the movie about to break $400 million at the box office in just three weeks, fans might want to see it clean up at the awards.
