‘Pop Culture Jeopardy’ Fans Worried About ‘Thirst Traps’ Category
Jeopardy! fans are getting ready for the Pop Culture Jeopardy! spin-off. The series, which features SNL alum Colin Jost as its host, already boasts a few changes from the usual format. However, fans are starting to worry the series will be dumbed down after seeing some of the upcoming categories in a preview.
Pop Culture Jeopardy! Will Have A Different Format Than The Main Series
The Pop Culture spin-off was announced back in May, with Colin Jost announced as the host in July. While pop culture is often the subject of clues on the main series, it is expected to be the main focus in its namesake series. Clues will now focus specifically on movies, TV shows, trends, and internet memes.
That’s just one of the various differences between the spin-off and the main series. Unlike the main series, the spin-off will have three teams of three playing the game.
Teams will then compete through quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. Eventually, three teams will advance to the final round for a chance to win $300,000.
Categories include “It Was The ’90s,” “Move, Witch–Get Out The Way,” and “Origin Of The Meme.” However, when a preview for the series was uploaded to Instagram, one category in particular rubbed some fans the wrong way: “Thirst Traps.”
As noted by The U.S. Sun, some fans began to worry about the standards of the spin-off will set itself to. One fan was quoted as “Dumbed down Jeopardy?”
Some Fans Are Worried About The Spin-Off’s New Categories, But Others Are Optimistic
Another fan shared, “Trash knowledge jeopardy, yay.” One user sarcastically chimed in, “It’s nice to see Jeopardy drop their standards and slide into vulgarity.”
That said, some fans were more hopeful over the series. As one fan wrote, “I’m already anticipating for the show to be renewed so I have a chance to be on. I feel like I’ve prepared my whole life for this!”

The series, which premieres December 4, 2024, won’t air on ABC. Instead, it will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime. Three new installments will be out each week.
Beforehand, the spin-off was promoted with the “Distracted Boyfriend” meme. In it, a man, representing the viewer, was distracted by Pop Culture Jeopardy!, despite having the classic Jeopardy! right beside him.

As previously reported, Jeopardy! producers Michael Davies and Sarah Floss talked about the spin-off on their Inside Jeopardy! podcast. Noting that some fans would think the series would be easier because it focused on pop culture, Davies didn’t agree with this.
As Davies pointed out, “The percentage of scores over a certain number on the pop culture test is exactly the same percentage we see on the regular test.” He also noted, “The competition on the buzzer, the competition deep in the categories, it’s pretty intense with that many people competing.”
