Gwen Stefani Reflects On Song That Made Her Career
Gwen Stefani recently reflected on the song that made her career, and one that is still a big hit today. So, what did she have to say about this career-defining track that launched her?
Gwen Stefani Has A Successful Career Spanning Decades
A lot of people can catch lightning in a bottle and make a hit in the music business. However, there are many cautionary tales of one-hit wonders who cannot follow up their success. In some cases, some artists may have a hit first album, but then fall into that sophomore slump, before fading into obscurity once again.
In Gwen Stefani’s case, she has managed to do the exact opposite. She went from No Doubt in the 1980s and 1990s to a thriving solo career in the 2000s, and even now, she is still making hits and putting out music that people want to listen to. In many ways, she has had more than one successful career in the music industry.
Stefani Reflects On No Doubt Hit That Changed Everything
No Doubt’s biggest hit was the classic tune, “Don’t Speak.” It was originally written by Stefani’s brother, and according to her, she recently told PEOPLE that the mega-hit was “completely different when he wrote it.”
Gwen Stefani essentially re-wrote the lyrics after the label was not happy with the verses. So, she eventually turned it into the 90s breakup anthem that it became. Reflecting on rewriting the song, Stefani said: “It’s one of those crazy rewrites — probably the only one in history ever that actually turned out to be the heartbeat of my entire life. I wouldn’t be here without that song.”
Gwen Stefani Continues To Gain New Fans
Even though Gwen Stefani is now in her 50s, she is still very much current in everything she does. Popular modern artists like Olivia Rodrigo continue to use Gwen as a source of inspiration. In addition to that, viewers also love her as a coach on The Voice.
Gwen just released her latest studio album, Bouquet, and fans are eagerly listening to this most recent offering from her. One other thing that being on The Voice has allowed Gwen to do is connect with current audiences, with many of them going back through her music catalog of the last 30 years.
All these years later, “Don’t Speak” continues to resonate as a timeless breakup anthem, as newer audiences get caught up with it, as well as her older solo work. In this aspect, Gwen still has gratitude for the song that ultimately put her where she is today.
