‘The View’ Whoopi Goldberg Cast In Broadway Villain Role
Whoopi Goldberg is starting a new gig while The View is on holiday break. An EGOT winner, Goldberg is heading back to the stage for the Broadway play Annie. Whoopi even said she knows she isn’t a singer but loves heading back to Broadway for another major musical role.
Here is what Whoopi had to say about her return to Broadway.
Whoopi Goldberg Talks Returning To Broadway For Annie
Whoopi Goldberg is coming to the Broadway musical Annie this December. However, her role is only temporary, and she will only be in the musical during its shows from December 11 to January 5. The other shows will have a different actress playing the villain role of Miss Hannigan.
Whoopi will play Miss Hannigan during Annie‘s holiday run at Madison Square Garden. Annie is about an orphan girl who gets to live with Daddy Warbucks but still wants to meet her birth parents. Miss Hannigan runs the orphanage Annie came from and is the story’s main villain.
Carol Burnett played Miss Hannigan in the 1982 movie.
As for the Broadway musical, Whoopi said this is not about her singing, which she said is not her forte. “I don’t sing,” Goldberg said (via Playbill). “This is like the third time I’m singing, but that’s not my thing.” The other times that Whoopi sang were in the Sister Act movies and the Broadway musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
“Stephen Sondheim okayed it, so I felt pretty good,” Whoopi said about the last Broadway singing experience. “He understood that it’s not always the voice—it’s the intention.”
In Annie, Whoopi will sing one of the play’s most famous songs, “Little Girls.” She said, “It’s been interesting. I’m just trying to not emulate what everyone else has done and trying to find my place in all of it.”
Whoopi Goldberg Is An EGOT Winner
Whoopi Goldberg has proven herself more than once in every aspect of her acting career. She is an EGOT winner, which is rare in the entertainment industry. She has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. Only 21 people have achieved this in history.
In 1990, Whoopi won her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Ghost, which stars Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. She has won two Emmys, one by herself for Beyond Tara: The Extraordinary Life of Hattie McDaniel. Her second was as part of The View ensemble cast.
Whoopi won a Grammy for Best Comedy Album for Whoopi Goldberg: Original Broadway Show Recording. Finally, she won a Tony for her role in the 2002 musical Thoroughly Modern Millie.
