There is a very slim chance of winning $1 million on Wheel of Fortune. First, A person must spin the big wheel and land on the $1 million spot. Then, they must make it to the Bonus Round and place it on that wheel. They spin and have to land on the $1 million spot again. Then, they have to get the puzzle correct.

Only four contestants in the history of the show have won the $1 million prize. It almost happened again this week as one contestant came close. Here is what happened.

Wheel Of Fortune Contestant Almost Wins $1 Million

On Wednesday, a contestant named Damon Sayles of Texas was on Wheel of Fortune. During the main game, he landed on the $1 million wedge and kept it for the rest of the game. Damon then won the game and got to head to the Bonus Round with the wedge.

This means that the $1 million wedge replaced the $100,000 wedge on the Bonus Round board. Two players this season have already won $100,000 in Ryan Seacrest’s first season as the host. Damon spun the wheel and then proceeded to go guess the puzzle.

Damon headed over, and the category was “What Are You Wearing.” The letters given to him (“R, S, T, L, N, E”) spelled out “-L—R–S / —N.” That was tough and Damon chose “G, M, W, O” as his letters. They were the perfect letters to help him solve the puzzle, as the board now read, “GL-MORO-S / GOWN.”

Damon easily solved it as “Glamorous Gown.”

Damon Missed Out On The $1 Million Based On The Spin

Heading into the Bonus Round, Damon had already won $29,290 and a trip to Barbados. He was a winner no matter what, but when he guessed the Bonus Puzzle, he knew he was a big winner. The question was whether he had spun the $1 million prize.

Ryan Seacrest opened the Wheel of Fortune envelope and showed Damon that he had won $40,000. Damon was clearly disappointed he didn’t win the $1 million, but he did admit, “I’ll take it” to the $40,000. He left with $69,290 in winnings plus his trip.

“What a big night for Damon. I thought my hands were beginning to sweat. He was so close with that great solve. But I feel it. It’s going to happen. And soon,” Seacrest said (via TV Insider).

Fans felt bad for Damon as well, but were happy he won a big prize anyway.

  • “He picked the right letters for the puzzle. Good job my man on winning the 40,000! It wasn’t the million at least… he still did magnificent!”
  • “Wasn’t the million dollar, but Damon really picked the right letters to get a lot of help.”
  • “No bc wheel of fortune is so wrong for giving him 40,000 dollars he earned that one million.”
