‘Today’ How Hoda Kotb Forced Cher To Drop F-Bomb
Hoda Kotb is an experienced host on The Today Show, so it is surprising she would encourage a visiting celebrity to make such a large on-air blunder. Kotb was interviewing Singer Cher when she encouraged the artist to drop an f-bomb on national morning television. So what exactly happened? Keep reading to find out!
Hoda Kotb Makes A Big Mistake
Today Show host Hoda Kotb was interviewing Cher on Tuesday when she made a very large mistake. Cher and Hoda sat down to discuss Cher’s latest book “Cher: The Memoir, Part One.” Kotb was asking Cher to recount an interaction she had with famous actress Lucille Ball. Turns out the conversation was not appropriate for television, but that didn’t stop Hoda from asking her to tell it!
Cher explained to Hoda Kotb that when she was in the process of leaving her ex-husband Sonny Bono, in 1975, he took all of the money that the couple had made together on The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour. Kotb was curious about what Cher did to cope with this. The “Moonlight” star explained that she approached I Love Lucy star Lucille Ball because she knew Ball had gone through a similar situation. So what happened?
This is where things start to go awry, Cher warns Hoda that the conversation between herself and Lucillie was not appropriate for television. Kotb insisted she would continue and production would edit out the inappropriate pieces. This however did not happen. Cher explained:
“I said, ‘Lucy, I’m calling you because, to my knowledge, there has never been a situation besides mine except yours and so [Ball] said, ‘F*** him, you’re the one with the talent.”
Hoda Kotb Curiosity Caused On Screen Blunder
Hoda Kotb was so engrossed in Cher telling her story that she did not consider if what she was about to say was appropriate for the Today Show. Kotb continued to encourage Cher to tell her story despite being warned. Kotb said “And what did she tell you to do?” Referencing Cher’s conversation with Ball. When warned it was inappropriate she continued to push the superstar, saying “OK, we’ll bleep it,” Kotb said. “But what did she say?”
The current YouTube clip of the conversation between Hoda Kotb and Cher does bleep out the swear word. However, the live version of the conversation was completely unedited and the curse word managed to be broadcast to thousands of homes. Cher has not been shy about the fact that she has reached out to other celebrities over the years. She has shared that she also reached out to Tina Turner during her split from Ike Turner.
What do you think of Hoda encouraging Cher to curse on national television? Should she have known better? Let us know in the comments!
