'DWTS' Jenna Johnson Dishes On What's Fueling Showmances

Showmances are nothing new on Dancing With The Stars. But plenty of fans noticed that there seem to be plenty this year. From Gleb Savchenko and Brooks Nader to Sasha Farber and Jenn Tran, there hasn’t been any shortage of rumors.

But why does it happen? DWTS Season 33 semifinalist Jenna Johnson recently opened up about the situation and shared her true feelings. Read on to get the scoop.

Jenna Johnson Emphasizes Connection For DWTS Competitors

In a new interview with Parade, Jenna Johnson explained that a great connection on Dancing With The Stars makes for a great partnership. If pros and celebrities can’t get along, they won’t go very far in the competition.

Thankfully, she and Joey Graziadei became fast friends right from the start. Before entering the ballroom, Joey requested a married pro dance partner so that he and his fiancee Kelsey Anderson could avoid rumors about scandalous affairs.

“I respect Joey’s wishes going into the show,” Jenna shared with Parade. “I think that’s so awesome, especially after being engaged and coming from a fresh relationship, I think that was the smart thing for him to do. I’m glad it happened to be me. Obviously dancing, especially ballroom dancing, is a really intimate experience. It’s two people paired together creating gorgeous shapes, and so obviously, to the naked eye that can be a little jolting at first if you don’t understand the art of ballroom or haven’t been a fan of the show for many years.”

Ultimately, this fuels a lot of the DWTS showmances.

The Pro Dancer Shares Helpful Relationship Tips

Jenna Johnson and Val Chmerkovskiy married in 2019 and welcomed their son, Rome, in 2023. But before that, Jenna experienced her own difficult feelings when it came to love on the dance floor and fan-created rumors. While she and Val were dating, he had a celebrity partner each year, but she was in the troupe. It wasn’t easy for her to deal with her boyfriend spending so much intimate time with someone else.

“Because I’m a dancer and I know what it takes to get a successful dance in less than a week, I understand the time commitment and how much effort goes into that,” the 30-year-old continued. “Obviously, when we were just dating and I wasn’t as secure in our relationship that was still hard for me, so I think that’s why I have empathy for the girlfriends of the partners.”

Jenna went on to share tips to help future celebrities prevent their romantic partners from getting jealous.

“I encourage all of my partners to be super thorough with their partners,” she added. “I tell them, ‘Show them the videos that we do at the end of the day, so they can be excited about what you’re learning, what you’re doing, and so it doesn’t feel like anything’s being hidden from them.’ Obviously, that comes with a lot of trust, which Val and I have had to learn through experience, communication, and open conversation.”
