The latest NCIS series follows the origin story of Leroy Jethro Gibbs joining the military law enforcement organization. As an origin story, Mark Harmon couldn’t play the role, and the series had to find a young actor to play the role. That ended up going to Austin Stowell, and Harmon seems happy with the choice.

Here is what Harmon had to say about Stowell’s casting and his thoughts on narrating the series.

Mark Harmon Talks NCIS: Origins Casting Process

Mark Harmon is still an executive producer for the NCIS franchise. As a result, he has a heavy hand in everything from casting to the storylines. He was also one of the people who helped pick out who played the younger version of his character. It was a process that Harmon said he loved.

“We’re happy with the cast,” Mark said. “Austin is a good kid and a nice actor. I think back to all the weeks we spent in casting offices trying to put that cast together, and we couldn’t be happier with this cast” (via Parade).

He also said that there will be changes, explaining how much things changed in the first four seasons of the main NCIS series. “There were huge changes, and you expect it’s going to be no different on this that there’ll be changes.”

Harmon also said that he loves seeing things start to form that fans of the original series know so well. This includes Gibbs’ “Rules.” “The intent always was to have great fun with that and there’s so many,” Harmon said. “[Showrunners] David [J. North] and Gina [Lucita Monreal] are enjoying opening those up.”

Mark Harmon Discusses Narrating New NCIS Series

While fans don’t get to see Mark Harmon playing Gibbs anymore, the good news is that he is still on the show. After making a cameo in the first episode, Harmon is on every episode of the series as the narrator, telling the story of his younger days.

“That’s been fun,” Harmon said. ” Sometimes I don’t have a lot of stuff to do in an episode, and then sometimes I’ve got a boatload of stuff to do and that’s putting words in the mouth of a character that traditionally said a lot with very little.”

The show is a little different from Young Sheldon. In that series, it wasn’t until the finale that it showed Sheldon Cooper was narrating his story for a book he was writing about himself. NCIS: Origins made that clear from the first episode, with Gibbs on a fishing boat working on his journal.

What do you think about Austin Stowell playing a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS: Origins? Do you enjoy still at least hearing Mark Harmon’s voice as the narrator for the series? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
