Indiana State Police Arrested Richard Allen In Late 2022

Back in October 2022, the world felt hopeful when Indiana State Police announced they arrested Richard Allen. For years, many began to lose faith that anyone would be brought to justice for the brutal crimes. To make matters worse, Indiana State Police kept many of the case details a secret. Everyone wanted answers and justice, but the case seemed to be growing colder by the day.

However, that was far from the truth. And on November 11, 2024, 52-year-old Richard Allen received a guilty verdict after a trial by his peers.

Indianapolis station Fox 59 reports that the state successfully presented evidence to convince the jury that Richard Allen committed this crime beyond a reasonable doubt. Compelling evidence included a bullet at the crime scene that matched Allen’s gun, a photograph of the suspect’s car near the crime scene, and the fact he confessed to being on the Monon High Bridge on the day of the attacks.

The Suspect Confessed To The Murders Multiple Times

After his arrest, Richard Allen called his wife and mother from the jail phone to confess to the crimes. According to Fox 59, he used a box cutter in the attack and threw it away in a CVS dumpster. The outlet also reports he wrote a letter to the prison warden, confessing to the murders. However, his defense claimed that he suffered a psychotic break in solitary confinement and made false confessions as a result of poor mental health.

According to the Westville Correctional Facility’s prison psychologist Dr. Monica Wala, Allen confessed he abducted the girls from the bridge with the intent of a sexual attack. However, a nearby van scared him, so he forced Abby and Libby across Deer Creek where he murdered them.

According to Allen’s defense team, the state didn’t have any “DNA, social media, nor digital forensic evidence” linking the suspect to the crime. They also argued the state made incredibly sloppy moves during the investigation and the bullet testing was inconclusive.
