Over the years, there has been some speculation over how much money Carey makes off the song. Back in 2014, the New York Post claimed the song earned Carey a total of $50 million in royalties from 194 to 2013. That could mean around $3.8 million a year.

As noted by Distractify, it was unclear if these figures were global. The publication also compared it to a claim Daily Mail made in 2015, alleging that Carey earned around £376,000, or around $400,000, annually for the song.

In 2017, The Economist claimed that the U.S. alone brought in Carey $60 million between 1994 and 2016 over the song. This means she earned around $2.6 million a year.
