Who Has The Power To Fire A ‘Below Deck’ Crew Member?
Below Deck, fans have speculated for a long time if the producers of the show are responsible for the firing of cast members. Captain Sandy Yawn is opening up about who is responsible for letting crew members go. At least 18 cast members have been fired from the franchise over the last 11 years it has been on air. Sandy Yawn Reveals Who Fires Cast Members
At any given time during the filming of Below Deck Med Captain Sandy Yawn is responsible for the lives of 28-33 cast and crew aboard her vessel. So what happens in a way that endangers those lives or is so egregious they need to be let go? Fans have speculated that producers are responsible for deciding to fire crew.
Captain Sandy has said that this is not the case. Fans have criticized Yawn for being too lenient on cast members and wonder why she does not fire them. Sandy has revealed that the captains on Below Deck are responsible for deciding who stays and who goes. Captain Yawn revealed that anytime she has to decide to fire someone she consults her lawyer.
Why Is Sandy Yawn’s Lawyer Firing People?
Sandy Yawn is an intelligent individual and she knows that firing or not firing someone has repercussions. However, she utilizes a lawyer to ensure the blowback from these decisions is managed. Sandy says “Every decision I’ve ever had to make, with production, going to sea, leaving the dock—in that case, drugs—I call my attorney. He said ‘It’s being filmed, God forbid something happened.'” Sandy follows the lawyer’s advice to avoid legal issues.
Captain Yawn emphasized that it took her years to obtain her maritime license, and she takes her responsibility as captain very seriously. However, while fan speculation is that producers make the decisions to fire people, in reality, it is the captain’s responsibility. Sandy takes her responsibility very seriously and she does not make these decisions based on viewers, producers, or drama.
Captain Sandy Yawn is cautious when it comes to the safety of all involved on her vessel. Ultimately that is what she and her lawyers base decisions on. She will consult with her lawyer and when it has been determined a crew member has solid evidence against them of endangering the safety of the vessel she will let them go.
