‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Blame Champion’s Loss On Poor Wager
There are plenty of reasons that Jeopardy! contestants lose on the show. In most cases, it is because they hit a series of questions out of their wheelhouse. There are other times when exhaustion comes into play, thanks to the number of games played in a short time. For a recent champion, fans blamed a bad bet.
Here is what happened and what fans thought about the loss.
Did Kelly Gates Lose Jeopardy! Because Of Bad Wagering?
There are many times that making a bad wager causes a Jeopardy! player to lose a game. There have been recent instances of a person in the lead wagering the wrong amount, which allows someone to catch up with them in Final Jeopardy! However, Kelly Gates might have lost because of a Daily Double wager.
Kelly Gates is a librarian, and her specialty is literary fiction. However, when she got the Daily Double in her ideal category, “Nonfiction,” she wagered conservatively. Gates, the defending champion, was playing Tristan Brown and Marcus Ghiringhelli.
Marcus found the first Daily Double and doubled his score. He got the second one, too, but missed it, which dropped him into third place. Then, Gates found the third one and saw it was “Nonfiction,” which gave her a chance to take a big lead. However, she only wagered $2,500 of her $7,600 on the guess.
The clue was: “The sedge is wither’d from the lake, and no birds sing.” Gates got it right with, “What is Silent Spring?” That moved her total to $10,100, but it could have been much more with a higher wager. Gates ended up losing on the day, and fans felt this wager was why.
Did Kelly Gates Lose Jeopardy! Based On Daily Double?
With this wager, Kelly had a small lead over Tristan, who had $9,400. However, by the time they went into Final Jeopardy!, Tristan had moved back into the lead with $14,600, and Kelly was at $11,300. On the final clue, only Tristan got it right and won, with $22,700 compared to Kelly’s $10,800.
There was no way Kelly could have won, even if she had gone all in on the Daily Double, since she would still have lost in the final round, and Tristan had a dominant lead after his correct answer. Despite this, fans still feel her more conservative wager was a turning point:
- “If Kelly was more aggressive with her wagers, especially on that Nonfiction Daily Double I think there’s a chance the outcome could have ended differently.”
- “Don’t know that it would have changed anything, but was very surprised that Kelly, a librarian, put such a small wager on DD3 in a “non-fiction” category.”
- “She had an opportunity to cement the lead going into FJ in a category that plays directly to her biggest competitive advantage.”
