‘Woman Of The Hour’: See The Real Man Behind This Film
Warning: This article features footage involving a true crime story that might be disturbing for some readers.
With the release of Woman of the Hour, many viewers have taken interest in the real life “Dating Game Killer.” Many have also taken note of the real life episode of The Dating Game that served as the basis of the film. As the real footage has been uploaded online, viewers are getting the chance to compare the film to what really happened.
Footage From The Original Game Show Has Shown Up On YouTube
The Netflix movie features actress Anna Kendrick, who is also making her directorial debut with the film, as Sheryl Bradshaw. Kendrick’s role is based on the real-life figure of Cheryl Bradshaw, who appeared on The Dating Game, where she chose to go out on a date with serial killer Rodney Alcala.
The film takes a few liberties to distance itself from the actual events. Notably, the film created a fictional host, Tony Hale’s Ed Burke, to take the place of the show’s real-life host, Jim Lange.
The “criminologytube” YouTube channel uploaded footage of the actual episode Bradshaw and Alcala appeared in. Notably, the video was uploaded on Dec 5, 2012, years before the release of Woman of the Hour. This gave fans of the Netflix film the chance to see the real events that inspired the film.
Rather than show the whole episode, the video mostly focused on Bradshaw and Alcala’s interactions with each other. As the footage shows, Alcala was the first “bachelor” presented on the show’s line-up. He could also be heard telling Bradshaw, “We’re gonna have a great time together, Cheryl.”
Some Of Alcala’s Lines Can Be Hard To Watch In Hindsight
When asked about his “best time,” Alcala also noted that, “The best time is at night. Nightime.” When asked why, he replied, “That’s the only time there is” and “Nighttime is when it really gets good.”
Upon Bradshaw asking Alcala to pretend to be a “dirty old man” for a pretend “drama” project, he started growling at her. While viewers at the time possibly saw these lines as jokes, with hindsight, many of them can be disturbing for modern viewers.
The video closes with Bradshaw choosing Alcala as her date. The two won tennis lessons together and a trip to Magic Mountain. In real life, however, as previously noted, Bradshaw ultimately ended up backing out of her date with Alcala, possibly saving her life from the serial killer.
As noted by Tyla, Alcala was convicted of murder just two years after his 1978 appearance on the show. He would soon be found guilty of murders in California, New York, and Wyoming. It is believed he could have been responsbile for up to 130 deaths. Ultimately, he died in prison in 2021.
