‘SNL’ Host Michael Keaton Gets Surprise During Monologue
Michael Keaton recently appeared on Saturday Night Live, taking on hosting duties for the fourth time. The actor’s opening monologue was crashed by a few familiar faces. In fact, while sharing the stage, they also had a special request for Keaton.
Keaton Suspected A Certain Ghost Would Be Popular This Halloween
As an actor, Michael Keaton is known for a variety of roles. These include playing the famous “ghost with the most” Beetlejuice and the eponymous superhero in 1989’s Batman and Batman Returns.
In fact, Keaton recently reprised the Beetlejuice character for the 2024 sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Notably, this was 36 years after the original film came out.
As noted by Deadline, Keaton talked about the character during his monologue, pointing out that he’d likely be a popular Halloween costume this year thanks to the sequel. “With Halloween coming up, I know I’m gonna see a lot of those little kids out there dressed just like Beetlejuice, which is adorable,” he shared.
The actor continued, “And I’m also gonna see a lot of grown men dressed up like Beetlejuice too, usually guys in their 40s, which is less adorable.” However, this would turn out to be a bit of foreshadowing.
Mikey Day then appeared dressed up as Beetlejuice, mimicking the character’s famous voice. He urged Keaton to “do the voice” and say the ghost’s famous catchphrase, “It’s showtime.” For his part, Keaton admitted, “To be honest, I don’t even remember how I said it.”
It’s Hard To Keep A Good Ghost Down
Soon, however, Andy Samberg soon showed up, also appearing dressed as the character. He joked about trying and failing to get his own “BJ” into the show during as time on SNL. When Keaton told him to use the character’s proper name, he was reminded the character would get sent back if someone said his name three times.
The camera panned to show Sarah Sherman dressed in a suspiciously striped black and white dress. While assuring Keaton that was how she normally dressed, she still gave her best Beetlejuice impersonation.
Noting that the SNL alumni were all quoting the original movie, Keaton soon asked if they’d seen the sequel yet. This brought about excuses like “not yet” and “it’s on the list.”
Finally, Keaton asked how long Day and Samberg would be standing alongside him. Both assured him they were staying until he did the voice. In the end, Keaton gave in, saying “We got a great show” in the iconic voice.
